Probably for the best. There are already AP tests, IB tests, and state mandated standardized testing. The SAT/ACT is sort of superfluous these days imo.

Was on mobile, here are some excerpts:

In a decision that could reshape the nations college admissions process, University of California regents voted Thursday to suspend SAT and ACT testing requirements through 2024 and eliminate them for California students by 2025.

The action by the nations premier public university system could mark a turning point in the long-running debate over whether the standardized tests unfairly discriminate against disadvantaged students or provide a useful tool to evaluate college applicants.

Some hailed the vote as a bold and visionary move to expand access and equity. But others expressed concern that dumping the tests would lead to grade inflation, admission of less-prepared students and backlash over different entry standards for different classes.

After conflicting presentations by experts and lengthy debate, regents approved UC President Janet Napolitanos five-year plan to ease out the SAT and ACT tests and develop the university systems own assessment.

Under the plan, standardized test results will be optional on applications for the next two years and then eliminated for California students in years three and four. By fall 2025, the UC system is aiming to have its own assessment. If none is developed by then, the university will drop the SAT and ACT tests entirely for California students and evaluate them using high school grades and a dozen other factors in its comprehensive review system.

High school grades are already inflated like crazy. I wouldn't use that as a legitimate concern.

As someone who did very poorly on the ACT at 17 years old, worked hard in community college to improve GPA, and then transferred to UC Davis at 27 years old, I overwhelmingly approve of this.

How will cali HS grass trying to enter colleges out of state compete without a SAT OR ACT?

Aside from that hopefully their schools now can focus less on irrelevant crap to pass said test on more time on useful knowledge and skills their need in their adult life.

They are still trying to iron out the details for out-of-state applicants.

The plan is to create a new test that better reflects preparedness and is equitable to all applicants. However, if a new test does not meet specified criteria in time for fall 2025 admission, UC will do away with the standardized testing requirement for California students. Details have not yet been worked out for out-of-state and international students beginning in 2025.

People still haven't figured out that you don't need a good SAT/ACT score to enter a university. A good trade school problem or a ton of money can get you in as well, there's also a few other special fulfillments you can do to get in as well.

This wont take off nationally. High schoolers in many public schools tend to have artificially inflated GPAs due to underwater basket-weaving electives and less rigorous curriculum. The ACT/SAT are there to sort through the bullshitters.
