I'm doing fine. I'm all for peaceful protesting, abhore rioting and looting, and am deeply saddened at some of the more radical views that have been espoused by people of all races and backgrounds. For example, a few African American friends advocating for segregation and some now former white friends saying things I'd rather not think about, let alone repeat here.

But seeing people of all backgrounds come together to help clean up the city and help out the store owners whose businesses were destroyed as well as delivery groceries and medicine to people who lost their nearest source is pretty uplifting.

we've been working with a couple organizations that make interest free loans to pay cash bail for nonviolent protesters (cash bail is returned when the person shows up at court)

they have operating budgets and generally people show up for court so the loan isn't forfeit but right now they're being strained pretty hard, so donations help them stay in operation

i'm somewhat at risk for COVID (asthma, other stuff) and my partner already has to go in to work regularly so we are not attending any of the protests ourselves

Interesting that the African American friends advocating for segregation are still friends while the white ones are not.

I'm doing fine. This is some pretty crazy shit going on. Can't protest because of location and lack of a car. Wouldn't anyway because I don't want to risk going out with the pandemic going on. I'm thinking I'm going to donate a bit of money though.

My life is fine to be honest. I still have a full time job, I still go to work every day, our country hasn't been toooo badly hit by coronavirus. At least, not as bad as the rest of the UK.

Every time I look at the news though my mood plummets 27 points. Same if I go on reddit or CE. I don't know what the fuck is going on in America man. Astounds me every day how fucked up things are. Used to think things like scientific denial, racism and religious fundamentalism were on the way out and now it feels like it's all on the way up because cheetoh in chief is galvanising the deplorables.

Living like I have for the past 5 years. Just moved into my new house on my new property. Not giving a damn about scamdemics or protests. I have no problem with protests. I have yet to meet or hear of anyone who does. Im not going to entertain the notion that protesters and rioters / looters are the same. One is protected by the 1st amendment, the other is low life scum who should face extreme penalties.

Interesting that the African American friends advocating for segregation are still friends while the white ones are not.

Well, the African American "friends" have since admitted it was an overreaction and don't really feel that way after a lengthy discussion. The white ones not so much. And I can't really be friends with someone who advocates for segregation or the re-enslavement of black people. So I blocked them all at first to clear up some negativity on my FB feed and then either unblocked or kept them blocked depending on the follow up conversations we had.

Unwell. Can't go out, feeling useless no matter what I do or say to support, and dealing with more and more intrusive thoughts of guilt and shame. Irredeemable and will never be enough.

Suffice to say I'm going to be mostly quiet while I get professional help.

I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, and feel like when it comes to a variety of things, I am either uninformed and/or misinformed and I don't feel like I am helping to influence the world better, whether it be via something along the line of "just" Internet comments or something more than that.

I spend too much of my time following various news and "the" news online, often not finishing articles and not finishing videos because so much of it is biased and there's too little time to read and research everything, especially if it teaches me nothing new and I don't want to fall into a circlejerk confirmation bias.

As far as my beliefs go regarding the conversation specifically about police killing unarmed black people (which to me is murder if the victim is not sufficiently threatening their life), the sheer size of the George Floyd protests do not change the facts.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/national/police-shootings-2018/
https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/national/police-shootings-2019/
Apparently according to these very detailed sources, 17 unarmed black people were killed by police in 2018, and 10 were killed in 2019.

Here's a literal rundown of every known case of unarmed black people fatally shot by police in 2019. And yes, it is Tucker Carlson. yes it is Fox News. Which for the longest time I did not bother following but this specific report seems extremely relevant to what's going on:
https://twitter.com/bennyjohnson/status/1268338365662986240

I basically never speak my mind about race in public or with people outside my family despite me pretty much never thinking in terms of stupid whataboutisms such as All Lives Matter (even tho Black Lives Matter is already a whataboutism). There's all sorts of things that I wish I'd say to people because I truly believe that I know what I'm talking about and am not talking out my ass/only considering what it's like to be me and not the other guy, and in addition I have rehearsed countless times how to not be antagonistic in my approach, and try to leave space for others to talk and for me to listen.

I'm typically an unhappy person and a major procrastinator working at the grocery store, But yet my life is the best it has ever been because I have more control than I ever had with what to do with my life. It's been worse. Less than two years ago, my other grocery store job was in an area that was just as majority-black as the one I am in now, but had more hateful assholes in the form of employees and co-workers that clearly got a rise out of belittling skinny white boys and creating impossible standards and passive-aggressive jabs at them for existing incorrectly (altho many did appreciate me and go out of their way to mention that I was one of the most effective and hard-working employees) so my temptation to feel hate depends on my situation and in some ways it is easier to not feel hate these days. There's more African-y black people in my current neighborhood than American-y ones.
