I've seen very few people (in the mainstream) openly admit they want to revert back to not having legal gay marriage.

Or do they pretend they were really always for it?

Or just ignore the issue entirely and hope people forget?

Ive never understood why anyone would be bent out of shape about gay people marrying.

But I dont think marriage should be something the government has control over anyway.

I also feel that polygamists should have the right to marry as well. Literally all of the same arguments apply. Consenting adults, etc.

That, because it doesn't actually effect their lives at all. Now it's changed, there's nothing to complain about, it's done.

You can get a legally unrecognised marriage if you want, as many as you like. Obviously if you want the government to enforce anything in that agreement, you have to follow the government's conditions.

Different concepts called marriage and people genuinenly believing that their concept is the only one, therefore rules and laws applying to their marriage, should apply to all marriages and laws enforced by the government potentially conflicting that.

Which of the concepts? The only one they really have a say in is legal marriage, as it is just a framework of rights between two adults and that one would be pointless if the government had no control over it.

That would change the definition and would probably need a lot of legal rewrites to actually make it work.

A lot of them now claim that they never really cared about the issue

despite the fact that they all totally did just a short time ago

I remember when I was in seventh grade, we had an assignment where we had to defend different viewpoints in a debate. I was given the issue of gay marriage. I remember at the time thinking "oh, of course, obviously I'm against it, how could anybody be in favor of gays marrying?" I was like 11 at the time, so my political views basically mirrored my parents.

When I had to actually sit down and do research for the presentation, I really couldn't come up with any good arguments against gay marriage. So I just did a half-assed job of arguing against it based mostly on conservative talking points But after that experience, I started to actually critically look at my opinions through a more objective lens.

A lot of people never get to that level of intelligence of a critically thinking 7th grader. They just stick with whatever stupid indoctrination they get from an early age. Whether it's from the Bible, their parents, their friends group, or elsewhere. In all honesty, it's really a lack of education and critical thinking skills that lead to opinions like that sticking around. And unfortunately, a huge chunk of our lawmakers and people in powerful positions still approach issues from that ignorant position.

Unfortunately this stance was commonly used to sidestep actually conceding that gay marriage should be recognized by the government; people convince themselves that being in favor of civil unions made them allies of LGBT, even if they directly opposed gay marriage. "They can be gay and live together if they want, just don't shove it in my face by forcing us to call it marriage."

Even if you yourself don't fit in that bin, just pointing out the distinction.

My uncle was gay. I would be a horrible person if I didnt support a member of my own family. I never have believed in labels. People are people.
