Went to the Fort Worth zoo on Wednesday. Was pretty cheap (only $8!) but my GOD was it hot. Also a lot of it was closed off (reptile room, aquarium part) so that was kinda a bummer.

---
I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was, and now what I'm with isn't it. And what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.

I used to be a Director's Club member of the San Diego Zoological Society. It was crazy expensive, but I got to go to all kinds of neat meetings and dinners and they basically would throw handfuls of free passes at you.

My SO and I had our first date at the San Diego Zoo.

Funny thing, though. I moved to Nebraska 15 years ago and I haven't been to the Henry Doorly yet.

The idea of zoos make me sad. I know there are some that are open etc, but still, I don't like the concept.

I have never gone to one that I can remember and never plan on going to one unless humanity is dead and I can free them all.

Of course!

Also @CedarPointcp I don't think I've heard "Cedar Point" in 35 years. Last time I was there the Demon Drop was just opening, which of course it also got stuck way up high and they had to rescue some people haha. Apparently it's not even around anymore.

Geesh I'm old.

Zoos are great and good for the planet. They nurture love and respect for animals into children and adults. Animals can be safe and happy without worrying about starvation or predators.

Humans built houses and locked doors to protect ourselves from the scary outside world. Zoos give animals that same protection.

You can't change my mind.

I do enjoy them quite a bit. The zoo's in my state and I think California as well, trade around the animals. Sometimes they're at my local and small zoo, other times they're at a bigger zoo. Makes me feel like they're actually being thought of and taken care of to be moved around so it isn't one cage forever.

Yes, I love it. However I never go in the summer, only in the winter. Yes, half as many animals are out but you are generally literally one of like 30 people max at the zoo, so its nice.

The Toledo & Cincinnati Zoos in Ohio are both great. I went to the Toledo Zoo as a little kid for years and went back for a visit 4 years ago and it's been completely redone and made 100x better. The tigers and other big cats especially used to be in these little barred cages with almost no room, now they have huge enclosures and their old cages have been converted into a huge cafeteria (this is way cooler than it sounds). It also has a fantastic aquarium. They have an alligator snapping turtle, and I almost wonder if it could possibly be the same EXACT friggin turtle I used to see as a 6 year old kid all those years ago? I mean it could be. That's pretty cool the possibility exists.

The aquarium? Yeah it's cool but I wish Dallas had a legit aquarium.

No, the ones I've been to smell like shit all over and I hate the idea of locking up animals from a completely different part of the world and charging people to watch them be miserable in a cage.

Good Zoo yes.

The NC Zoo is pretty big with even its own Savannah biome where they have a safari.

And its cheap! Only $15 bucks for admission, I'd rather go pay to walk out in the sun and see animals anyday then go see a movie.

Its too bad Aquariums are no where near as affordable to visit.

I'm not sure. I haven't been to a zoo since I was 8, the heat and humidity that day made it a miserable experience.

I grow up with the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. They are amazing conservationists. I really enjoy them. I'm glad my wife and I visited the zoo with my parents the last time I was in San Diego.

I went for the first time in decades with my sister and nephews some recent winter (can't remember which year).

It was pretty cold, but otherwise it was fairly awesome. I was like 10 years old the last time I'd been there. the main thing I noticed was how much smaller it felt. as a kid I had no grasp of the size, it might as well have been infinitely big, but as an adult it was obviously just a small park.

the best thing we saw was probably the penguins. ice cold in the room, but it was filled with maybe 50 or so penguins of all different kinds, and they were practically right in front of you, separated only by a glass "fence" that was around head height. the penguins were either standing above you on the rocks, or swimming in the water behind the glass at eye level.

the only other thing I remember clearly were snow leopards (my nephews call every large cat "cheetahs" and I always have to correct them; I had to look around for the sign to know what to call them because I never seen these things before). I think there were ostriches or emus or something, and some kind of Ibex like thing that I never heard of.

My favorites are the rhinos, hippos, and crocodiles.

Not too many zoos even seem to have hippos, but damn are they cool as hell up close.

Speaking of which, any of you guys ever see a salt water croc up close? They are unbelievably huge. Like you hear "Oh, they can grow to 20 feet long" but what's most amazing is how friggin' WIDE they are too. They had one at the Cincinnati zoo lats time I went and it was like at least 5 feet across with the legs. They are just giant creatures!
