Maths is impartial, true. The implementation of maths, now that can be racially biased.

Take a known case of a release of automatic hand dryers that did not work for black people. Does that mean light sensors are racist? No, but the lack of diversity within the development and testing teams caused the racial issue. For every "it's just math!" Issue, there were people who had to apply that math.

It's a weird hashtag to use but STEM is very predominately white male dominated in America. There are many extreme biases held by current scientists on who can be scientists and their capabilities so I understand the fight.

This

My stem classes are filled to the brim with white people, but also a pretty decent amount of middle eastern and Asian students, actually

Very few black students though. I feel like it's something that they're discouraged from pursuing and they really shouldnt be

Not medical, there are more female med school students than men for example.

Yeah, should be trying to get more black people into STEM. My technology career has pretty much saved me and made my life so much better.

I mean, it's just about getting scientists to take a day and focus on the cultural issues in and out of the scientific community in regards to race.

There's a weird thing going on in science right now. It's particularly evident on science twitter, where there's like two distinct groups of people, people who seem to be acting business as usual, and those who have shifted their social media presence to acknowledge BLM and the issues that minorities face in science. This is kinda a push to make sure those at the top in science actually acknowledge the issues.

I get the sense that this was supposed to be a "heheh liberals don't care about science when it doesn't suit them" topic or something, but that's completely missing the point of the scientist driven movement.

Why are people so quick to jump to "White people must be racist" rather than looking at the things in black culture that dissuade them from going into STEM fields to begin with? Black people (and women similarly) just aren't going into STEM as much as white men, they aren't being beaten back at the doors.

Because these biases are observed from within, for example:
https://twitter.com/max_bertolero/status/1270389975910166528?s=19

But like, systemic biases and outcomes have extremely complicated feedback loops. You can't just say "well, black people just don't want to be in science" and sweep that shit under the rug (without even any reason to believe that particular stance lol).

And they can accidentally manifest in ways like not thinking about obtaining balanced datasets and ending up having your computer vision tool label gorillas as black people or vice versa.

One of my acquaintances (met her in 2008 out of the blue at a REU program function and she added me on Facebook way before she became notable) dedicates her work to addressing this and it's been brought up on CE before

Well here's a starting point

https://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2018/01/09/blacks-in-stem-jobs-are-especially-concerned-about-diversity-and-discrimination-in-the-workplace/

But as a black person in a STEM field getting a little tired of the shitposting in regards to the topic, if I get some dumbass summary of this from you I'm not even gonna entertain it with a response

Lol here's what I got from it anyways

limited access to quality education, discrimination in recruitment and promotions and a lack of encouragement to pursue these jobs from an early age.

I can get behind fixing that.

I think there is a lot of truth to this, black women for example are going to college at a waaaaaaay higher rate than black men (and white men and white women) for some reason:
