An internal memo sent to Starbucks employees last week specifically warned staffers against wearing accessories or clothes bearing messages in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The memo, obtained by BuzzFeed News, reminds staffers that such messages are prohibited under the company's policy against accessories that "advocated a political, religious or personal issue." Numerous employees told the news outlet, however, that the company regularly allows or even encourages employees to wear pins in support of LGBTQ equality, especially during Pride Month every June. "Starbucks LGBTQ+ partners wear LGBTQ+ pins and shirts, that also could incite and create violent experiences amongst partners and customers," one black transgender employee of the coffee chain told BuzzFeed. We have partners who experienced harassment and transphobia/homophobia for wearing their pins and shirts, and Starbucks still stands behind them."

A video from a top company executive reportedly sent with the memo warned employees that "agitators who misconstrue the fundamental principles" of the movement could seek to "amplify divisiveness" if the messages are displayed in stores. "We know your intent is genuine and understand how personal this is for so many of us. This is important and we hear you," the memo read. A company spokesperson confirmed the memo's authenticity to BuzzFeed and said that such messages are prohibited "to create a safe and welcoming" environment at Starbucks locations.

#BoycottStarbucks is now trending on twitter with tweets like this: https://twitter.com/IAmBishop617/status/1271156869801873413

Do you think this is the same as you can't put up religious stuff at work? I know at the school I work in, we can't put up Christmas decorations in the kitchen because you might offend someone. And yes, Christmas stuff, not Christian stuff, lol. Like, we can't even put up a small tree with Candy Canes and lights on it

Literally going to Starbucks today to support this.

The movement has gotten too big and I'm tired of seeing all these businesses align like they actually give a ****. I hate their coffee, but if Starbucks is a reprieve from this nonsense then I am giving them my support.

Starbucks has never been one of the good guys. They maintain gender dividers in Middle Eastern countries, forcing women to use a separate side door so they're not seen in public with men.

Their new straw free plastic lids use even more plastic than their old lids plus the straws put together.

They have always been an extremely savvy opportunistic organization that will jump on whatever is trending but when push comes to shove their policies only extend as far their bottom line.

I legit thought the issue with plastic straws was them getting stuck in ocean animal's noses and them choking on them, not how much plastic was being used in general

The straw and the shape itself was the problem, not that it was plastic.

And how to you expect them to stop believing in their believes? Go in and kill all the "bad" ones? Genocide? Again, these were the same reasons why they killed all the Natives here. Why they pillaged Africa, they thought those people were less than human because of the way they looked and thought. YOu want to do the same thing, go into a country take away everything they believe in, and make them more like you.

... MFW.

The argument against plastics was that they took forever to degrade, accumulating into a giant blob like the pacific garbage patch, and in the event that they do breakdown, they become "microplastics" or whatever and accumulate within the food chain; in addition to assaulting the nostrils of turtles and other animals.

So yes, the amount of disposable plastics, or plastic waste in general, has been a sticking point of eco-terrorists in general.

Can they not support about LBTQ stuff? Because going back to what tI said about my work, we simply can't put up anything sort of political or religious stuff. But again, it's a public school. But I do know that some places don't the workers do this so they don't offend someone. Like saying Merry Christmas to someone that believes something different and that offends them.

...what about them? Theres been a huge push to ban them too. What does that have to do with your misunderstanding on why straws were singled out?

Thinking that using more plastics for their new lids is better because the trade-off is "no more straws!" is dumb, as the crux of the problem has always been the use of plastics and their resistance to degradation in general.

Yes, most studies support using more plastic and no straws as being better for the environment. Conservatives like to highlight the use of plastic as a case of hypocrisy from liberals
I can't tell if this is sarcasm against what I said but this was what I was referring to

https://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org/blog/2015/10/27/the-turtle-that-became-the-anti-plastic-straw-poster-child

Clearly I understand that more plastic in general isn't an improvement for the environment, but was pointing out the movement against plastic straws themselves and the reasoning.

And I even hate people saying it's a political thing because both movements, at their core, just want to be not murdered and treated like people.
