And I mean this isn't a generational thing, it has always been a problem.

But I see so many people who just didn't care about grades in high school, didn't go to college or even dropped out of college, and just live with a bunch of room mates (usually friends) and work shitty jobs.

They don't care because they still feel popular and party a lot but like this life style isn't sustainable. Life isn't all drugs, sex, and parties. I mean seriously, you are going to get to your 40s, you'll be unattractive, poor, and have no chance of retiring when you get older.

It is just so short sighted, there are just too many people who think in the short term. It is all about "what is going to make me feel happy NOW?" "what is going to make me feel good NOW?"

Like I just finished my Masters Degree, I have a ton of job options (some have even contacted me recently) and so much to live for. Sure I partied as a kid, I lived somewhere where weed was legal so I had my share of fun, dated and all that, but I still have life goals. These kids have no idea wtf they are doing and eventually they are going to lose their support (parents and relatives will die) and they will be all on their own, with like MAYBE 1k in their bank account, and a shitty retail job or food service job. There just isn't light at the end of the tunnel for these people.

This was kinda me up until like a couple of years ago. It was more due to insecurity and having low self-esteem than just straight up not giving a fuck though. I'm working on finishing up my Bachelor's and then getting my Master's now. I hope I haven't fucked myself too hard but I should be good.

No see, that's fine. No one is perfect. Being bi polar hurt my grades in undergrad. Not our fault.

I'm talking about the people who just clearly don't give a single shit about anything and even when they do land some shitty job, they are terrible at it as well.

As someone who is close to his thirties. I have been trying to do a 180. It's been difficult, I'm still in prerequisites but I'm trying to have those set goals. I'm hoping,

Direction does not come from something like a masters, good job, etc.
Even one day you may find that as empty as they find the party lifestyle.

I mean at least I'll be able to retire and support a family.

Some people develop drive, work ethic and ambitions later in life.

After drifting through university, I took a number of years to decide what I wished to do with my life. Even then, a few years later I discovered a career I had never considered and effectively doubled my salary in five years through working my way into better paid, more fulfilling positions.

Now, I am comfortable financially and am in a career I rarely find to be actual work, since it is enjoying and fulfilling.

Most kids are dumb, aimless, and ignorant. If you want them to have direction, you need to start early and actively instill it into them.

I thought the same, did all my partying when I was in my early 20s. Now as I approach 30, I am shocked at the volume of people who do cocaine regularly. Functioning, high-paid people.

For me, finding a sense of purpose turned everything around. It was difficult as hell to do that though because a combination of genetics and trauma turned me off to the normal things that motivate people. Lifelong morbid obesity and later alcoholism destroyed what little ambition I had.

I ended up defining my life by the things I didn't want (reproducing, wealth, prestige, fame, excellence, etc) and that just caused me to stagnate. I got to a point where it was either dying or finding a reason to live and in that desperation, I managed to find some things that motivate me. And I found them in places and through people I'd never imagined, which is something I think a lot of people are prevented from experiencing.

You get this pretty narrow idea of what's an acceptable goal in life, what's an acceptable reason for having it, and what's an acceptable path to get there. If you don't/can't fit that, then nothing else really matters. Tacking on mental health and other obstacles, it's pretty easy to just not care and not act.

That's a great idea.

Most of the friends I retained after leaving school ride the white horse quite regularly.

Personally, I do not see the appeal. I have only seen them once since they insisted on picking up some for a boys night a few years ago, from a sweaty fat man who lived in a garage.
