Its honestly terrifying to see self identified cops defend the murder of a citizen. Just more evidence that there is deep rooted problems with the police force in this country.

Where did I defend anything? I said the D.A. put himself in a bind when he labeled the taser a deadly weapon in a previous case, and I identified that it would be an issue in this one.

A deadly weapon in the hands of a fleeing felon is covered under Tennessee v. Garner. If he finds a way to reconcile that, and the jury accepts the taser as a non-deadly weapon, it wont be covered.

Are you that biased against cops that, in your eyes, a legal interpretation by one is an endorsement of killing civilians?

What percentage of the 1000 killings by cop is 50? Im pretty damn dumb apparently, but i reckon thats over 90% were armed. What were you saying... 9/10 were unjustified? How you feel about that now?

Its even more nuanced, out of that number even more were carrying bb or airsoft guns but for the sake of the data its counted as unarmed. So that number is even lower but im not gona quibble.

Thats out of 300,000,000+ cop interactions per year, the overwhelming majority being totally harmless.

At this point youre basically saying until cops are perfect theyre shit. Lol its humanly impossible , especially in a society as dangerous as this. And i can drop some FBI tables on your ass if you wana see how dangerous it really is.

I don't know about this one. He was fighting the cop and took one of his weapons.

Meaningful change doesnt come from confirmation bias and ignoring facts because they weaken your argument. You see a bad shooting, you think all shootings are bad. You then think that, just because you think its unjustified, it should be murder. But the law is more nuanced than that, and situations are more nuanced than that.

Its not cut and dry when it comes to these issues, and none of it fits in a neat little box.

Now, granted, I totally agree with the charges here, but the problem is as a DA if you start picking and choosing when a taser is considered a deadly weapon, you're going to give the defense a lot of room to pick apart your inconsistency. If the taser was a deadly weapon, and it was fired at the officers, in the moment they would be justified in using deadly force even if the suspect was actively fleeing.

No that's the thing. The taser was stolen because the cop used it first meaning there was an unauthorized use of deadly force. So regardless of which interpretation you choose the officer committed a crime with either the taser or the gun.

Felony Murder here seems to be the charge because someone died in a non murderous way (shot while holding a deadly weapon) during the commission of a different Felony (unauthorized use of deadly force)

Had a long talk with my ex-NYPD dad the other day (car was in the shop so he gave me a ride to work)

Man, this guy has openly bragged to me about breaking peoples' fingers, lying about his hours to get free OT, profiling, stealing drugs from people on the street (so he could get high)

It was a crazy talk. First real talk we had in a long-ass time. I could probs make a thread about it but I'm about to be at my post limit. He listens to hannity, and hannity was going on about the cop who murdered Brooks, and lying about what happened. I said "what that's not what happened, there's literally video" and my dad got visibly annoyed with me but didn't challenge me on it or anything.

When he picked me up after work he started talking about the murder, and that's when we had what felt like a real conversation. He said something that completely and utterly shocked me.

"The way it played out makes it seem like they killed that dude because he was running away and they were mad they couldn't catch him"

And I'm like "...yeah it's a bad look" and he goes on about how they were asking him questions leading up to it, like how much money does he have on him and why does he have so many bills. Again, my dad shocks me with "They only asked him that cuz he was black"

And i'm like damn. If my crooked cop dad can see it, why can't so many of you and so many others in this country

Didn't the literal autopsy report say the bullet wound was in his back?

From the video he was running away, then aimed back at the cops with the taser while stil running forward. Once that happened, the cop fired his weapon.

Tbh I don't know why people are averse to higher standards and harsher consequences for cops. They're in a position of authority and need to set a good example, not act like criminal with a badge.

Wouldn't people rather have a cop who has been trained for several years, knows how to handle himself and others in any situation and to always de escalate instead of trigger happy high school dropouts?

Like how the police were following procedure, talking calmly... how Brooks was alert, responsive, understood what was happening, wasn't behaving in irrational ways... how Brooks was clearly drunk while driving, which is what called for his arrest... and when the lawful arrest was made, Brooks fought hard, rolled around, wrestled, stole a taser, and fired it at an officer.

If he had just allowed himself to be cuffed for violating the law (which he clearly did violate) he'd be alive right now.

The charges are ridiculous, no way they are going to stick.

Video was very clear. The criminal was willing to do whatever it would take to not be arrested again... Assaulting and disarming a cop then firing a weapon at them... all after driving around the city so drunk that he passed out at the wheel in the drive through.

Police used unauthorized deadly force against a fleeing suspect. They shot him in the back.
