Chef Boyardee was a real person. Granted, he deliberately requested his name be mispelled so that people would pronounce it correctly, but that's pretty much it.

Aunt Jemima was based on a real person technically, but she really wasn't involved in that process and ultimately the image conveyed was not appropriate.

I dont get why the mammy stereotype is a bad thing, rich white kids getting rasied by black nannies played a huge role in leading to the civil rights movement a lot of the time they cared more about the kids than the parents did.

Because they were forced to neglect their own children.

The image of Chef Boyardee is damaging to italians and enforces the stereotype that all they do is cook and wear tall hats.

131 years of not only black history, but American history. Like as old as Coca-Cola. The image has changed over the years, it's not the same as it was but in 1900 ffs.

Honestly its gonna need to come to that. I could probably think of 50+ professional and college sports teams that should be changed. Endless amounts of products need to be changed. Gotta take them all away.

It's not like a minstrel character appearing in a Popeye cartoon or Bus Bunny wearing blackface for one scene of one short. She was created to play upon the slave/house servant stereotype and was presented as an obese Black woman with a nonsensical dialect: "Lawsee!"

The title of "Aunt" and "Uncle" came about as patronizing terms of endearment because titles of respectability such as "Mister" and "Missus" could not be applied to Black people in the Antebellum South. You could rebrand it as Jemima's Syrup, but why fight to keep a character who offers so little and has such an unsavory past?

I understand the fight against censorship. Mia did nothing wrong and should not have been removed from Land O Lakes. She was an authentic Native American woman designed by a Native American woman. The same does not hold true for Aunt Jemima. She was designed by people who wanted to present an image of Black servitude and conjure up nostalgia over the era of slavery.

Efforts have been made to change that image, but it's not worth holding onto a name or a character with such baggage.

This. also it gets a fair bit worse if you look at the older versions of the ad. Way back when it wasn't just a black lady doing a "mammy" stereotype, it was legit a white person, in blackface, doing a mammy stereotype.

There's way too much baggage there to keep the character around, compared to the no consequence of getting rid of her.

o_0

Okay... I was not aware of that interpretation of the character.

All the more reason to lay the character to rest.

They don't. They just want to be racist with nobody telling them to stop, and it takes weird directions whenever we get to something like "we're removing this ad character because it has a bit of a racist history and we think that's not cool".

Okay but why not reclaim it? The word ***** is objectly offensive and has no redeeming qualities yet it is okay now. The way I see the mammy stereotype is just a strong maternal figure like any other nanny or a grandma.
