As soon as it became apparent that she wasn't interested (despite at several points having the opportunity to say so) he left her alone and offered to pay for her cab back to her hotel. Like... where's the menacing? Where's the manipulation?

For the record, it is rude to be texting in the middle of dinner or conversation. And a lot of places take purses and phones at the door so they're not lost or stolen.

There's no indication that he 'forced her number into his phone' for sinister reasons, either. She doesn't say that he harassed her or anything afterward.

The worst offense was during the car ride when they didn't take her to her friend...when she outright lied about having a boyfriend and never mentioned, wanting to leave, instead giving a wishy washy excuse. But the article itself words it more like they convinced her to stay with them, not that they forced her to.

Also don't forget the part where she intentionally doesn't mention she has a bf because of reasons in her head. Apparently it overrides telling him so he actually knows the deal and can instantly back off. But no, that's his fault as well.

Some dudes respond aggressively or even violently when girls deny them. A lot of people don't take obvious hints until an expectation is already built, like this chick. Not many actually will get physical, but there's always a risk. So a lot of people will try to get out without outright denying them or insulting their pride.

This isnt really incriminating, just embarrassing for both parties. Joe (and I dont watch him) was way out of line, but this girl ignored every obvious signal that he was asking her on a date. Socially awkward girl ignores obvious signs that arent explicitly spelled out, doesnt communicate her intentions, and socially awkward drunk guy gets mad that she pretended to be oblivious and assumed she was using him. Neither handled it well, and the most embarrassing thing is sharing this account publicly to ruin his reputation. Over practically nothing. Unless I missed something about him hitting her or touching her sexually.

This basically. Though I think it very much needs to be said that AJ sounds like a douche. I mean, I stopped watching his show many years ago for the same reason. This story fulfills my confirmation bias.

I haven't been able to gather who exactly put this story out. If it was the girl trying to #metoo AJ then I find her much less sympathetic. She was at best super oblivious to some big social cues and at worst just straight using him for professional advancement. If she was the one who put this story out then my understanding of her will lean towards the latter.

Still though. AJ sucks and I can't stand his show. I think it should fail for completely separate reasons from this incident.

I think the disconnect is from people who've never been in these social situations. They tend to think everything is black and white because they never experienced all the subtleties first hand. They also tend to think women actually go after men who are nervous about making any little move without permission. They don't realize how much that kills the momentum

Taking a second to make sure they both know it's a date has never harmed me in my experience. I wouldn't be surprised if it used to, but nobody in their 20s today is gonna think it's weird for you to make it clear that you're interested in this being a date and not just a platonic thing.

There are so many scummy YouTube/Twitch/other content creators that it's still surprising to me that people end up in these situations where women end up one on one with these pseudo-famous people who like them for no particular reason and then get surprised when they're only interested in sex instead of "helping them improve their channel" or whatever.

I feel you. I meant more so like overstating it. But you're also pushing off the responsibility completely on the guy if you're blaming Joe for that. Like I previously stated, there were safe environments for her to be forthcoming and she decided to go with a man to a secluded area.

It's not completely unreasonable for a man to see that as a sign the girl has a certain level of comfort, even though he could be more forthcoming as well. I think this is a situation where both made minor bad calls and it lead to a lot of awkwardness and uncertainty. I also find it reasonable for women to be more on the defensive/offensive in this climate and for men not to get butthurt about it. My main thing is that I'd never throw away a person for this.
