People are disgusting and essentially have no idea how to keep their bodily secretions to themselves. This old guy at my gym "wears a mask" but pulls it down after every set to drink from his bottle. And without fail, he will take his hand and rub all over his mouth and nose before putting his mask on, touching his face more as he adjusts it, before proceeding with his routine. Staff don't do anything. Half-assed job wiping things down when he's done, neglecting to clean touched surfaces like knobs or the weight stack. And this kind of person is everywhere.

People are gross, but we've come a long way since the plague. Hopefully fewer people dispose of their poop and pee by collecting it in a bucket and then dumping it out their window. Mice and rats are significantly less involved with sharing our food supply than they used to.

In practice I don't think pulling your mask back for a drink or wiping sweat off your face is going to be a huge risk (particularly if you wash or sanitize your hands regularly). The masks are about minimizing exposure but you cant actually prevent all the airborne viruses from escaping without an air tight seal around your whole body.

Wearing your mask under your nose is the only thing that's truly like 99% useless and l literally can't believe how many people I see doing it.

americans definitely have bad hygiene compared to most other countries. japan didnt shut down at all and theyre basically fine because they wore masks and arent disgusting slobs.

That's the primary issue. You get a whole lot of people making adjustments to their masks without washing their hands. I especially like the ones that wear a single pair of rubber gloves to do everything and then take their mask off with said gloves. If your hands are clean, yes, it is generally going to be okay, but I know I really only wear a mask in environments where hand washing/sanitizing isn't readily available, and in those cases, I don't remove it until I can wash/sanitize my hands.

90+% of people don't wipe off surfaces where hands touch, like seat adjustment knobs. Some people will hit handles. Usually, people only 'clean' surfaces that you sit or rest your body against get a pass with cleaning rags/paper towels.

That said, this man took an extra step backwards by just spraying his hand with cleaning solution, then rubbing his hands over some surfaces.

Not to mention, the cleaner being provided in my gym seems to just be a discount glass cleaner; not even an actual disinfectant.

I want to blame this on the parents, but at some point its a conscious effort from the individual. Like by some stage of life they should be able to see what most consider to be normal behaviour, yet they just dont get it.

Considering how many times the world has been threatened by pandemics originating from Chinese and other nations' wet markets (SARS, H1N1, etc) as well as the fact those nations STILL have those wet markets, it really was only a matter of time. And, given that China's wet markets in Wuhan already started to re-open, it's probably only a matter of time until the next pandemic.

The world is too interconnected. It allows things that might have only wiped out a village or two to spread across the entire world.

And while it's easy to blame nations like China for the reckless shit they do, you also need to blame the so-called "leadership" of the rest of the world for failing to pressure nations with problematic health standards to stop doing that shit. If the world would band together and stop trading with China until it enacted reforms, those reforms would be in place within the year. After that, world leaders could start pressuring all of the other offenders to begin to follow suit. But that shit will never happen because either you have spineless politicians (like Obama) who refuse to acknowledge the problem or you have tough-talkers (like Trump) who fail to get the international buy-in to address the problem.

This has been a lot bigger than HIV/AIDs, considering that in under a year it's claimed 125k lives in the US in just a few months.

I obviously cant vouch for what theyre using in this scenario but what you usually see in a gym (or at least what its supposed to be), that blue liquid in a frosty white spray bottle, is Ammonium. Ammonium is actually very effective against viruses. Thats of course assuming they didnt water it down to cut down on costs.
The chemistry behind disinfectants is more complicated than people think, and tampering with it can totally ruin its disinfectant properties.
Take alcohol for example, most people probably wouldnt realize that 70% Isopropanol is more effective at disinfecting than a 99% isopropanol solution. Many people would think theres more alcohol in it so its gotta do a better job right?.
Also, Alcohol (looking at you instant hand sanitizer) isnt very effective against viruses. Alcohol can kill viruses, but generally doesnt. Its very effective against bacteria though. Also worth noting, isopropyl is better for cleansing than Ethyl.

Sorry I keep getting sidetracked (I have a lot to say on this subject )
What I was going to say initially is, Ammonium is a very good disinfectant but I wouldn't bet my health on the gym using it properly.

You know, it really bugs me that employees at a lot of places aren't doing this.

Like, I've seen plenty of businesses that don't properly clean their stores, equipment, doors, etc. Yet all of the employees are wearing masks. Like why half-ass it?

I've also seen some amusement parks and similar entertainment businesses that are somehow open. The employees are required to wear masks, but they don't wipe down the equipment between rides. <_<
