There are many different variations and schools of thought in communist ideology, quite a few of which have been exercised in authoritarian states. Socialism can be regarded as either a transitional system trying to achieve communism, or a separate system trying to achieve similar things without intending to abolish the state. Cuba is a socialist country. Discussions of it are somewhat muddled by decades of propaganda.
