I like the works of both, but I'd have to give the edge to Lovecraft.

Shout out to the great Vincent Price Roger Corman Poe movies from the 60s. I try to watch some of them every year around Halloween.

Seems like more people could pick out a singular work from Poe than they could Lovecraft. He's way more known for the general mythos moreso than the individual works.

I feel like Lovecraft was more creative and interesting, but Poe was the better writer.

didn't he only write like 3 stories in the 'lovecraft' style? i'm pretty sure much of that work was actually done by other writers.

Poe has more memorable stories with more interesting turns and twists in the end, but Lovecraft revolutionized a kind of horror that transcends the earthly plane and teaches us to fear the cosmos and the unknown.

So, Poe has better works, Lovecraft has a better 'universe'. Both are legends.

Lovecraft

Much more effective and evocative horror. Poe is horror as a macabre, gothic aesthetic, whereas Lovecraft is horror as genuine existential terror.

Better writer in which sense? Or just in general/overall?

That's interesting! So it comes down to the unimaginable cosmic terrors vs the realized horrors within ourselves....in a way
