Not for me. For my son.

He will be starting kindergarten this fall, and while I'm hoping he gets a normal school experience I highly doubt it.

I currently have a desktop with no mic or webcam, but it's in the office on the main floor of my house. My home office is upstairs and I'd prefer to get him something portable so he can be within earshot if he needs help.

Think it's worth buying a laptop? He has an iPad but I can't imagine that would be easy to learn on.

just buy him the cheapest laptop with an ssd. A chromebook sounds good in theory but windows is a lot better since eventually he will need to learn that anyway

Thats crazy to me to imagine kindergarteners doing online schooling. Like, wont they have trouble sitting still or even grasping the concept of whats going on? I guess people are becoming versed in technology at earlier and earlier ages these days, though. Im just curious how it would work.

I assumed your kid was in like high school or college before I read past the first line of the OP, lol.

It isn't the reality I want for him, but... thems the times I guess. He is pretty proficient with a tablet.

Fair point. I looked at some of the chromebooks, and while they're cheap, I want to make sure this is a suitable computer for several years and can play some simpler games. I remember buying a netbook when they were still new and it was comical how limited they were in terms of utility and capability. I bought it to take notes in university and spent most of my time bringing my actual laptop because it was useless for anything more technical than a word document.

That would be a sensible thing to do. I suspect it will be a long time before education is back to normal.

You could also use it as an opportunity to teach responsibility - his laptop, etc. it is also never too young to begin teaching ICT literacy!
