Or is it a natural expression of their freedom guaranteed to them by the first amendment?

Some were introducing a constitutional amendment

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_Desecration_Amendment

I don't think they should burn the flag, personally, but it doesn't really bother me. They're exercising their rights and I feel changing the constitution to make it a crime opens up the floodgates for further curbing of rights down the road, perhaps not immediately but I'd rather not tempt it.

I don't care much for symbols in general.

I'm pretty sure revolutionaries tore down and burned King George's coat of arms back in 1776.

I give it the same value of flying the flag upside down as a sign of distress - "something is wrong with this country, and you need to listen".

As the full saying goes: My country, right or wrong - if right, to keep it right, and if wrong, to set it right.

Its a form of protest and I think protest against injustice is more patriotic than blind faith to those in power.

Even if it did bother me (which it doesn't), I'd just have to accept that sometimes, you just have to put up with being bothered by something.
