Depends more on roast level actually. Darker roasts are lovely with milk, as the flavor is, well, more "roasty", and you lose some of the floral or fruity notes. Medium or light roasts are recommended to be drank as black coffee without milk.

But the term "medium" roast also has a bit of leeway, you'll be able to tell if a medium roast is more on the lighter side or more on the darker side, all labelled "medium roasts" are not the same.
