Zithers 07/03/20 11:07:07 PM #1:	Since theaters are closed and new movies trickle in via streaming services or virtual cinemas with little fanfare, I feel it is important to remind you all that the MCU is not cinema, nor are various other franchise films that Hollywood keeps making and giving $300m advertising budgets to. It is also important to remind you that "cinema" much like thousands of other words in the English language has various definitions. You may go to Google and see the following: a theater where movies are shown for public entertainment; a movie theater. or motion picture usually used attributively However, and this is certainly not common knowledge, those who consider themselves movie enthusiasts have a separate definition of "cinema." I guess it could be seen as a parallel to people who separate books into literature and not literature. Personally, I like to default to Steven Soderbergh's definition of the term, which he gave during a keynote speech at the San Francisco International Film Festival several years ago: Now we finally arrive at the subject of this rant, which is the state of cinema. First of all, is there a difference between cinema and movies? Yeah. If I were on Team America, Id say Fuck yeah! The simplest way that I can describe it is that a movie is something you see, and cinema is something thats made. It has nothing to do with the captured medium, it doesnt have anything to do with where the screen is, if its in your bedroom, your iPad, it doesnt even really have to be a movie. It could be a commercial, it could be something on YouTube. Cinema is a specificity of vision. Its an approach in which everything matters. Its the polar opposite of generic or arbitrary and the result is as unique as a signature or a fingerprint. It isnt made by a committee, and it isnt made by a company, and it isnt made by the audience. It means that if this filmmaker didnt do it, it either wouldnt exist at all, or it wouldnt exist in anything like this form. This expands cinema into realms outside of feature films of course: TikTok, Vine, YouTube, television, etc. Now, under this definition, we cannot say that Marvel, nor any other number of generic blockbusters Hollywood produces each year, is cinema. It is a term reserved for works that allow a filmmaker to work on their own terms, without the restraints of appealing to every quadrant, China, etc. It's also okay to like these movies. And then when people are willing to go see superhero movies on the big screen again, they're going to be far more willing to see literally everything else, including smaller-budget, arthouse movies. People will probably go to the movies less and make it even more focused on only seeing mega budget stuff.
