The holocaust being one of the single worst atrocitys of all time that the world knows and will never forget is likely why Germany handled it the way they did. Meanwhile how many other countrys acknowledge their history of slavery? Or the numerous other sins of their past?

In regards to the confederacy the only reason they still exist is becuase....
*They had a timeless symbol(the confederate flag)
* For better or for worse(depending on perspectives)The north didnt wipe them out completely, both in lives, and the history books.

There......can be a myriad of reasons for it though so even if people acknowledge it they may not come the same conclusion as you. Their feelings toward criminals may also be a factor. Some have sympathy while others have zero tolerance.

The American slave trade was another of history's worst atrocities, although it isn't presented that way. Millions died just on the way here and millions died here, not counting the destruction of families, the maimings, the mass imprisonment, the rape. And it lasted for centuries, not 10 years. Simply acknowledging it is not good enough when much of our society was either built on or funded by it and the consequences flow down unabated to the present day.

The Confederate image is in no way timeless. It was implanted with any lasting aura it has by people like the KKK and the white supremacists of the 20th century who warped history to create the Lost Cause myth to whitewash the Confederacy, by the people who took up the mantle of the Confederacy and installed white supremacy in former confederate states, and by white people in non-confederate states who had nothing to do with the Confederacy, but loved white supremacy.

As I think I've said before, the War on Drugs was explicitly a project of racial domination. Its had its intended effect. And much of our attitude towards crime, especially drug crime, piggybacks off of deep seated racism and leads to the idea that huge portions of the population are just fundamentally dangerous, incorrigible, undeserving of mercy, and simply need to be removed from society for everyone's safety. See Superpredators. It's not a coincidence that almost as soon as the Civil Rights laws were passed and black people began to have some semblance of true freedom, the War on Drugs was started not even a few years later and mass incarceration of lower class black people began.

Im gonna be honest.

This seems stupid. There are plenty of black people who celebrate 4th of July because we dont consider it symbolism for the past. Its just a day for family to shoot fireworks (or guns for the less intelligent) and eat.

The last thing I need is white people thinking I hate Independence Day just because some athlete claimed we wont celebrate it.

Lets focus on things actually important.

Never have I ever seen independence day in my eyes as a black man who grew up in America as a celebration of America's independence for myself a celebration of freedom. I just can't celebrate it the same way mentally as a white person. I use this day to celebrate good food, setting shit off, my friends and my neighbors.
But when I do take the time to think about this day and also freedom, which one is to do. I begin to think about my people's history and how we were not free. I think about how crazy it must have been and felt back in those times for my ancestors. I imagine them barely clothed. I see them on boats shackled and chained with a whip at their back and white figures hovering over them as they row. I picture them on farms and plantations doing forced labor all day long. I see them raped. I imagine the degradation.

Then I fast forward and picture segregation. Civil rights movement. War on drugs. Our stereotypesd roles in film. The demonizing of our music and culture in the 90s, something that I can remember because I lived through it. Civil rights 2020 and the fact that there is a movement called BLM and that it triggers majority white people. The fact that a black man regardless of a priveledged upbringing gets berated for posting a video about his people's lack of freedom on independence day. As if people can't believe that even that he grew up around whites and has money, that he could never have experienced racism.

Even though here in America us black and white people live together, we live in two completely different worlds, and I just don't ever think that here in America there will ever be a day where a white person could ever understand any of this. But it is not wrong of white people to celebrate their day of freedom from Britain. For them it is a victory and certainly for them a day worth celebrating. I see nothing wrong with the day. It's just not for everybody and white people need to quit getting upset that not everyone holds the day in such high regards as they do. Still a good day to eat good food, drink and enjoy the company of loved ones.

I don't understand the point of bringing this up. The speech was given in 1852 and slavery wasn't over at the time. If you bring a former slave to give a speech commemorating freedom a country when his own people aren't free in that country, ones that he is fighting for the rights of, what the flying **** did you expect him to say?

And relevant to the topic, all races are susceptible to slavery in this country, and it is not sanctioned by the government. Trying to spin this as applicable to a white supremacy narrative is dishonest.

That's your well poisoning characterization of this. And that's not what the little reasonable discussion happening in this topic was actually about. It's about the views of some members of marginalized groups on a holiday celebrating freedom and equality when they are not free or equal.

While we're at it, what's Ja Rule's take on all of this. But yeah, let's get rid of the strawman. What's the reason that you picked Stephen A Smith as your notable example in a topic full of suspiciously picked examples

I mentioned Stephen A Smith because he is vocal about racism and he actually knows Colin Kaepernick.

But yeah grasp at more straws and don't address anything else I said because I mentioned Stephen A Smith. (Meanwhile saying let's get rid of the strawman).

I'm done with this argument. You accuse me of only knowing the term strawman or grasping straws 10 minutes ago but you obviously still don't know what it means because you did it again.
