Dude's said plenty of stupid shit and seems to have morality that'll turn on a dime the second someone's in power.
But he's been one of Trump's most ardent defenders in the Senate for years now, so it's interesting to see what his thoughts on Trump were before it was politically useful to kiss ass.

Not sure if that video will convince Republicans to abandon Trump or to turn against Graham, but either is a win to me.

*insert conservative politician's name here* Derangement Syndrome.

That was first coined by the late conservative columnist and notable Trump critic Charles Krauthammer a few years into George W. Bush's first term as "Bush Derangement Syndrome" (something that's aged like milk given how the rest of Bush's years in office went) and that was pretty much the last time it was in any way creative or meaningful. Worth noting that Krauthammer's column on Bush Derangement Syndrome was heavily sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek, not a serious statement on the anti-Bush mindset.

Unsurprisingly, conservatives completely missed the nuance in Krauthammer's column and thought it was the most brilliant thing ever and have since recycled it for every single conservative politician in existence when they need to defend them against legitimate criticism. Canada got "Harper Derangement Syndrome", the UK got "Boris Derangement Syndrome" and even retroactively applied it to get "Thatcher Derangement Syndrome", and now it's been updated to "Trump Derangement Syndrome" by redhats who think they're parroting a new and bitingly clever jab at the libs and, much like yourself, don't realize that they're using an ancient conservative meme that's older than fucking MySpace.

I am very confused about how you view the world. Why would I stop saying a phrase because it has older roots? It is a useful and fun way to describe a particular case of partisan bias. It seems like you have a pretty fundamental problem with the basic way that languages evolve.

If you want to be technical, Trump co-opted the term first.

If you'll recall, "fake news" in 2015/2016 described an actual, real problem: Facebook "news sites", frequently fronts for Russia-based propaganda that were disseminated by bot farms, peddling bullshit stories and objectively false information, targeting American voters (mostly conservatives but some were aimed at liberals as well). When it started getting lots of press and people pointed out that Trump was benefiting, he started using the phrase extensively, except in his parlance it changed from "factually wrong targeted bullshit being peddled by malign state actors" to "any news story/organization I don't like". And fuck him, he was so successful at redefining the phrase that most people have forgotten that it actually used to be an important term used to describe a real and substantial problem.

Also, perhaps I'm just not running in the right circles, but I haven't seen leftists using "fake news" unironically, at least not with any regularity. Any time I see it used it's still done as a mockery of Trump's use of the phrase (or used to point out legitimately fake news).

What's not to understand? You're using a two-decade-old conservative meme. If you can't understand the relevance after I just laid out the history of the term, you're beyond my help.

No, it's an ad hominem way of attempting to shut down a discussion when you realize you can't actually challenge the substance of the other person's views, so you're trying to figure out a way to disengage and avoid addressing the topic at hand while still claiming victory.

This is precisely why the "Derangement Syndrome" hack is such a tired schtick - it's not witty or clever, it's not actually saying anything of substance, it's just calling the other side names in an attempt to make yourself feel better. It should have died out 15 years ago, but conservatives just can't seem to come up with any new material to use so they keep recycling old shit and just updating the names and hoping no one notices (and, to be fair, most of their own followers don't, as you've already proved).

You talk about the carbon footprint, fumes are spewing into the air, right? Spewing. Whether its in China, Germany, its going into the air. Its our air, their air, everything, right?" - Donald Trump

"Ive seen the most beautiful fields, farms, fields most gorgeous things youve ever seen, and then you have these ugly things going up. And sometimes theyre made by different companies. You know, Im like a perfectionist; I really built good stuff. And so youll see like a few windmills made by one company: General Electric. And then youll see a few made by Siemens, and youll see a few made by some other guy that doesnt have 10 cents, so it looks like a so you see all these windows, theyre all different shades of colour. Theyre like sort of white, but one is like an orange-white. Its my favourite colour: orange." - Donald Trump

Conversation 2 (April 2019):

"I hope they now go and take a look at the oranges, the oranges of the investigation, the beginnings of that investigation. [...] The Mueller report I wished covered the oranges, how it started, the beginnings of the investigation, how it started. It didnt cover that, and for some reason none of that was discussed." - Donald Trump

My father is German, right? Was German, and born in a very wonderful place in Germany, so I have a great feeling for Germany." - Donald Trump, whose father, Fred Trump, was born in the US and lived there his entire life.

"If you have a windmill anywhere near your house, congratulations, your house just went down 75 per cent in value. And they say the noise causes cancer. You tell me that one, OK?" - Donald Trump

Conversation 3 (June 2020):

In response to a question of "what is one of your top priority items for your second term?" from Sean Hannity.

Well, one of the things that will be really great, you know, the word experience is still good. I always say talent is more important than experience. Ive always said that. But the word experience is a very important word. Its an, a very important meaning. I never did this before. I never slept over in Washington. I was in Washington, I think, 17 times. All of a sudden, Im president of the United States. You know the story. Im riding down Pennsylvania Avenue with our first lady and I say, This is great'. But I didnt know very many people in Washington, it wasnt my thing. I was from Manhattan, from New York. Now, I know everybody, and I have great people in the administration. You make some mistakes. Like, you know, an idiot like Bolton. The only thing he wanted to do was drop bombs on everybody. You dont have to drop bombs on everybody. You dont have to kill people. - Donald Trump

Conversation 4 (July 2016):

"Look, having nuclear my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart you know, if youre a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say Im one of the smartest people anywhere in the world its true! but when youre a conservative Republican they try oh, do they do a number thats why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because were a little disadvantaged but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me it would have been so easy, and its not as important as these lives are nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of whats going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? but when you look at whats going on with the four prisoners now it used to be three, now its four but when it was three and even now, I would have said its all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they dont, they havent figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, its gonna take them about another 150 years but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible. - Donald Trump

Donald Trump is plainly unwell, even compared to just a few years ago. He frequently loses track of his train of thought, he's displaying signs of aphasia (substituting similar-sounding or similar-meaning words to the words he's actually trying to use - like when he was going off about the "oranges" of the Mueller report, something he misstated multiple times at different points in his speech), and his inability to process complex ideas or focus for extended lengths of time has been reported on so often we've almost stopped recognizing that a president who is unable to read through basic briefings and has to have them orally presented and simplified isn't normal. This is without even touching on his physical health, like his infamous ramp-walk or his sudden, unexplained visit to the Walter Reed Medical Center late last year.

Trump can't focus, can't speak coherently (something that is getting worse as time progresses), and is displaying all the signs of a senior in cognitive decline. His verbal diarrhea reads like a textbook case of Wernicke's Aphasia. Anybody who has watched a grandparent mentally fade will recognize a lot in Trump's behaviour. I don't know if he had a mild stroke last year, if it's the onset of Alzheimer's, or if it's something else altogether, but Trump is plainly mentally unwell (beyond his lifelong struggles with NPD).
he's definitely dumb, i've had a discussion with kim kardashian, so i've starred stupid in the eyes, ok?

It's pretty much the only case of "Never Trump" that Republicans actually adhere to when push comes to shove -- Did he do something wrong? No! Never Trump ('s fault)!

It's a useful term for when people seem unwilling to admit anything he did was okay. e.g, not wanting to hire people like John Bolton in his second term again is a good thing. Yet pointing this out makes people think I must really like Trump or something, even when I explicitly say otherwise. I think he's probably the worst president from the last 80 years besides Reagan, George W. Bush, and Richard Nixon. I would put him a notch below Bill Clinton.

Realizing that Trump is bad doesn't automatically make the quote in question bad though. It suggests a specific change for what he would do in his second term -- not hire people like John Bolton -- and that change would be an improvement. Not hiring warmongers is obviously good, so this would be an improvement over his first term. He has a rambling style of speech, but it's ludicrous to claim that the quote in question is a sign of dementia.

He already hired Bolton.
Pompeo is still there.
That lady that destroyed the evidence of our use of torture is still the CIA head.

He's still chock full of neocon war hawks and will continue to accrue them, don't let him continuously bull shit you.

And Trump has done a few good things (kill the Trans-Pacific trade agreement, move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, uh...probably a few others but damn it's hard to think of them) and in some other cases has the right goal but just goes about it fucking stupidly (most notably his jousts w/ China about trade imbalance, currency manipulation, concerns about Huawei, etc...).
But it is completely and utterly dwarfed by all the negatives.

I'm not sure why you said this. I said "again" in my post. Did you actually read it?

What? what's good about further entangling the US with an ethno-nationalist state? Not to mention the IDF killed like 60 innocent palestinian protestors when this happened

Yeah, I did. I listed some other examples that are still around, and the fact he thought hiring Bolton was a good idea in the first place is damning of his judgment. No one can claim who he will or won't hire in the future with absolute certainty. But based on who he's hired and who's still around, you should have ZERO faith in him actually keeping his word on not hiring more people like Bolton.

Not to mention, "learning from his mistake" just isn't something Trump does. He doubles down. He doesn't change.

It had to happen eventually. It's their capital, period. It's crazy to think they'll ever give it up. A nation chooses where its capital is, the rest of the world doesn't get to dictate somewhere else. The sooner people get the fuck over it and Jerusalem being the capital is normalized, the sooner people can move on from fighting over it.

And "innocent" protestors that were attacking Israel, you mean? I swear...if Mexico launched 1/100th of the rockets at us that Palestine lobs at Israel, the U.S. would've fucking carpet bombed the country by now. The insane, suicidal restraint people seem to expect Israel to have is crazy.

If he cared at all about not hiring warmongers he would have never hired Bolton to begin with. The guy is literally known for being one of the most aggressive warhawks in the political world.

This was the point of the first half of the Trump quote.

Whoever wins the election will be the first president to die of old age while in office. Neither of them are going to last 4 more years.

Do you have any idea how stressful being the president is? Biden already looks like he's one heart attack away from buying the farm.
