For a lot of universities (R1 universities), the primary purpose is really research, not teaching. The university is there to sustain research labs.

Maybe those in person things need to adjust to the times instead of dragging everything else down with them.

Do college campuses need to be as big as they are for research to be done?

And if so, would the colleges be able to afford to sustain themselves if all those students weren't paying tuition?

Absolutely. These mother fuckers don't do jack shit. They post material from 3 years ago and most quizes grade themselves. If you have a valid question all you usually get is "watch the videos" (which don't answer shit) or "google it" (which also doesn't answer specific questions). I'm thinking about becoming an online College Professor. I think that's a pretty care free career and i've seen their salaries, not too shabby.

In terms of lab facilities? Yes, even bigger given the increasing population of scientists.

Probably only if grant funding were far, far more available, which is not going go happen any time in the future.

Research institutions that operate like that typically are contingent on continued grant funding from the PI, as far as I understand it.

This seems like an inherently corrupt system.

What happens if people can't afford college anymore and just stop going?

But also, do colleges cost this much to exist in other countries? Or is this just a US thing?

Yep, and in exchange for not attending lecture they give you some shitty material and double the workload. It's bullshit.

Classes can function online just fine, but online classes are garbage for most subjects. Just because we technologically can doesn't mean they all should transition to that.

Not fucking 7k for room and board and like 1.5k+ for a meal plan per semester value. And that's what I got charged for an instate student. The 3 years I lived on campus cost me 60k in loans and shit before tuition factored in.

This video says administrative bloat is bad and also that endowments are very suspicious. The main conclusion is that colleges are businesses but these things are the strongest evidence of that.

Just from a few searches it seems that average-sized state universities have endowments in the $100 millions and large state universities have endowments in the billions. The big private schools have a lot more than that as mentioned in the video.

Also this video sucks for hating on Epcot

I've been an administrator at 4 colleges. With that being said, you need both kinds of colleges, online and physical. Each has niches that the other cannot fill.

One of the colleges where I worked was a hybrid which had the best of both worlds. But even it had its problems.
