Did you know that Japanese doesn't really have a "V" sound? They have something kind of between a "b" and a p" though. So, things like "Sailor Venus" sound like... well, a bit phallic, honestly.

Did you know that the "Varia Suit" in Metroid is actually just supposed to be a "Barrier Suit"?

L/R, B/V and TH/S are common issues when it comes to translating Japanese (see also: Aeris/Aerith)

I think I can hear "Rinku" around 0:24 with an "u" at the end, but that might just be my mind hearing what it wants lol

I always thought the "-u" at the end of consonants was the way of fitting foreign words into a phonetic system that is mostly consonant-vowel. "N" is like the only consonant that can stand completely on its own in Japanese, isn't it?

It's Saiyan, or just Saiya. Jin is just a Japanese suffix that doesn't carry over to English.

Kurilin. The Rin here is just Japanese for Lin as in Shaolin.

But the u can be made silent when you pronounce it, so Krilin is fine. Krillin rolls off the tongue better, so it also works.

His name also derives from kuri, a chestnut. In universe it is spelled Kulilin which isn't surprising because Japanese often don't differentiate between l and r for romanization. I think a lot of people here are missing the point of the original post. In universe, within Dragon Ball itself, her name is spelled Bloomers, and that's also the origin of the name. People are hung up on phonetics and missing the point. Japanese people say it like Buruma, but that doesn't mean that's how her name is spelled in universe.

That's a good point, but sometimes the "in-universe" spelling isn't very accurate or consistent either, like Koopa being "Kuppa" in some instances, or Yoshi being "Yossy"

although I guess those are lesser examples since they're pronounced the same either way...

I wouldn't bother trying to dissect irregularities in names in very old works. Otherwise the main antagonist of Phantasy Star is Big Black Cock.

Kuppa is the standard romanization of the Japanese pronunciation. The official romanization is Koopa though. Yoshi has been officially romanized as Yoshi in most cases, Yossy does reflect the actual pronunciation better though in the case of the double s (though you still need to say sy like shii).

it's still interesting to see why some spellings are used while others aren't

I learned about the whole Yoshi/Yossy issue from this article:
https://legendsoflocalization.com/qa-why-is-yoshi-sometimes-called-yossy/
https://legendsoflocalization.com/yossy-image-gallery/

if you listen to how he says it in the game it is a bit more like "yos-shee" and not "yo-shee"

That article is wrong. The system of romanization taught in Japanese schools would spell is yossii (or with an accent mark above a single i, like ). They probably just spelled it that way because they though it was interesting.

That's the opposite of what this topic is saying though. It's saying the pronunciation isn't reflective of the in-universe spelling. Bloomers becoming Bulma is basically like calling Cell, Seru. Or Aerith becoming Earisu for that matter.
