ignoring that though its only hard if you have strict rules of engagement. millitary and police have enough weapons and armament that are several steps beyond anything privately owned that suppression of a population could easily be accomplished if they didn't mind pulling a tiananmen square. no amount of AR15s will hurt tanks after all.

It's not really about what weapons they have. The problem is that if people are willing to fight back in large numbers, you can't just massacre them into submission without defeating the purpose of trying in the first place. Tanks might be invincible to most of what private citizens can have but they don't force people to engage in the productive activity that you want from your territory.

We have 20% unemployment and 1/3 of renters facing eviction. They have plenty of boot lickers saying protesters get what they deserve.

You also don't have mass unrest of the entire society or open gunfights between civilians and military personnel going on every hour in major cities. You have economic issues that have gotten so much worse right now because of a pandemic. It's not anything that resembles the hypothetical scenario where the government tries to control a heavily resistant population via military force.

and police have already been targeted, shot and killed during the riots. things are already in motion, just not on a wide scale yet which is inevitable if we keep going the way we are. militias are already poping up all over (even the fucking boogboys hvae been seen marching with black panthers against the police and government), guns sales are going through the roof with ~40% being first time buyers, probably by previous anti-gun liberals who are starting to see the writing on the wall.

The US lost a war in Afghanistan to a bunch of people with whatever rifles they could find, an insurgency is a legitimate threat, and contained in the US some soldiers would like switch sides.

The real issue is very few people actually want freedom. Most are bootlickers and the main thing they arguing over is which boots they want to lick. If the person wearing the boots claims to be left or right wing is pretty much all that matters. It's really unfortunate but I don't know if anything can be done about it. The weird thing is it seems to almost entirely depend on what the person says, not their actual policies. You could be a fascist but if you claim to be a revolutionary communist some people will volunteer to lick boots.

The current Trump administration in America has gone against so many alleged conservative principles, like free trade, reduced spending, etc. while denigrating allies and praising enemies that conservatives used to constantly fear monger over (we love North Korea and Russia now!). Don't expect the bootlickers to turn on the government if it's got the boots they like licking in office.

Tyranny isn't about solving problems. Like I mentioned before they don't give two shits if 1/3 of people go homeless. They would be fine with 90% of Americans being killed and boot lickers are more than 10% of the population.
