Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

mainly how does Estelle fight? Was she trained in the art of REALLY BIG STICK or does she usually just hit things until they fall down? Roman is no slouch here.

see, yeah, that other guy in the video is an amateur at the REALLY BIG STICK. He's spending a lot of time not hitting people with it. Estelle would skip that nonsense and spend more time bashing him in.

Real talk she's a badass in an organization of badasses, a fighter trained in investigation and situational awareness. This jabroni seems like a lesser version of Bleublanc, an antagonist that I'm sure would job to her in a fair fight

The girl Roman one-ups in that fight is fast enough to deflect gunfire, like Estelle, so they're on even footing for speed, probably. How is her durability? Roman has the same aura shielding as everyone else on the show, which lets him take hits from someone who can easily slice up robots (black bow girl again)

Gameplay vs story durability is a tough call, but if we're going down this road, she can tank forty-foot tall mech punching her in the face, amongst other nonsense. Storywise, she beats up what is fairly called an angel and what is fairly called a demon, who are both very powerful... with a stick. Gauging strength is pretty rough, but comparatively to her opponents, she did some cool shit. Of course, the Power of Friendship was in play, but it isn't like she's supposed to be a support or anything

Roman usually chooses to bail if nonsense starts happening, even if Estelle is part of a team beating up angels and demons with her STICK feels like a huge point in her favor. He might have a durability advantage but his aura can run out if he's hit enough and then he's a normal dude

...Roman kinda sucks here actually

So we've got a fighter who uses a big stick incredibly well (does she do anything else? Any spells?), and a fighter who uses a cane incredibly well. Roman seems more cautious, while Estelle seems more like the type to dive in. If Roman's aura is in danger of running out, he'll probably keep his distance, but Estelle seems hotheaded enough to pursue him, and well-trained enough to follow the chase.

Leaning Estelle at the moment.

gameplay-wise, she has access to magic. "canon" gameplay-wise, she'd probably be able to buff her strength and use fire magic. story-wise, she never uses magic. character-wise, she'd probably forget to buff herself until the middle of the fight, and wouldn't use offensive magic unless it was clearly the best strategy

I just remembered that, by Zero, she learned the limit break her father used in one of the games, so she's probably approaching the top tier of staff fighters in her world

I figure this starts with Roman making some remark about all the weird kids he keeps fighting, and Estelle threatens to break his teeth and rushes in immediately. I haven't been able to find anything showing her doing more than "run/jump in, hit them with stick" so I'm not sure how their fight would actually go. Roman's aura gives him an advantage early since he doesn't have to worry about any hits he takes, but if he's not able to put her down quickly he'll probably be in trouble.

To be fair Roman is able to style on people who fuck up giant monsters on the regular as well and his weapon has more versatility as most RWBY weapons do.

How does Estelle fight when she's angry? Roman talks shit literally constantly, I'm not sure there's anyone in this bracket who would have an easier time getting under her skin

She's mature enough by now not to rush in headlong just because she's pissed. Thinking with her head and not just her heart was one of the main lessons she learned over the course of the games. Anyway, to really set her off, he'd probably need to insult and threaten her friends, which Roman wouldn't know anything about. He might get her a little more careless, but probably not in any way that's decisive

Without knowing how skilled Estelle actually is compared to him it's hard to say if that would be decisive or not, but he usually gets the upper hand on anyone who fights aggressively, even if they seem to have advantages over him

Eh leaning Roman given his combat and opponents though I guess it would depend how the monsters / angels / demons mentioned compare to the Grimm and Hunters they beat on. I also wonder if Roman would have access to magic dust or not
