The battle system... Ugh.

I like all of it except for this fucking timer. Failing turns is the most frustrated a game has ever made me feel tbh.

If you can't figure out a turn, you can either dump tons of money into the battle to give yourself more time, or... you admit defeat on that turn. It is the worst feeling battle system to mess up on that I have ever played and I fucking hate this part of it. It's a goddamn shame because every single other part of the game I'm enjoying, including all other aspects of the battles so far. I like puzzles, but who the fuck thought a timer like this was a good idea. It is absolutely atrocious. And yes, I'm kinda fuckin pissed off about it.

Yes, I know, "get over it" and shit. I'm aware. But I have never ever in my life been made to feel so frustrated by any failure in a game. It's so so stupid, and I'm gonna complain about it if I want.

Yeah, I don't like the timer either. It feels bad when you're forced to just give up because you can't solve it in time, and I kinda hate using the Toads because they basically solve it for you. I kinda suck at puzzles so the battles are starting to get frustrating.

It feels like the game is extorting me by using my pride as leverage. "Oh Tim, you can't solve the puzzle in 40 seconds? Tough shit. Cough up the cash if you want to keep trying or just admit defeat and then we beat the shit out of you"

It doesn't help that the "time up" sequence basically just rubs in your face that you couldn't figure it out.

Do you have to get the ring 100% right or can you get it half right and still do some damage?

You can still get it half right, but getting it 100% practically means you won the battle considering you get an attack power boost enough to kill most enemies in one shot. And not getting it 100% right means you'll probably take a lot of damage if you haven't taken out most of the enemies by the time your turn is gone.

I see. Still sounds ok then

This is what you're forced to do when you give up and don't want to pay the money to continue solving the turn. It's still the player conceding that he cannot solve the puzzle, and just accepting that the game's going to beat the shit out of you for it unless you pay up.

But winning isn't the issue, you get plenty of healing items, and other items you can buy and stuff to help you win the battle even if you fuck up the puzzles. That's not the point. The point is that the game puts you in a position where the only options are to admit that you can't solve a puzzle and get super penalized for it, or you spend god knows how much coinage to prove that you can. It's the worst-feeling loss-scenario I have ever experienced in a game.

How hard do the puzzles get? I have only seen early game footage and they seemed simple early on.

I'm still not far at all, only just about to fight the first chapter-style boss. So I'm sure they get harder. They're usually pretty simple, but sometimes they've hit me with some wacky configurations that I can't just solve instantly. Not sure how hard they get later

What feels worst is when you get the puzzle right but the enemies are too strong for you to OHKO anyway.
And then they're Snifits who spawn more enemies ._.

Yeah I know, but like I said, the ability to solve the puzzles is not the issue here. No matter how good I am, there will always be the possibility of me not being able to solve one, and that is always gonna result in me being forced to give up, or spend a fortune trying to win. Skill level and challenge of the puzzle are not my enemies here, the timer is.

Can't agree with this so far. I'm enjoying it a lot, even though it's obviously not up to snuff with the cream of the paper Mario crop

That sounds totally fine to me though. I would be bested by the game and my stats, not the arbitrary timer forcing me to give up. This part sounds just as manageable as any other turn based battle imo.

After you clear the second streamer, you should be able to get the puzzle solver.

It's the devs' way of acknowledging that battles may start to overstay their welcome.

The game throws coins at you though. And there's accessories you can use to extend the timer. My timer hits 60-80 seconds most of the time at the point I'm at which is more than enough time to solve any of these puzzles.

Trust the puzzles get harder but also easier as you progress because you start to understand them a little more.

And yeah the Boos are annoying lmao
