i use cheap ass like 35 40 dollar a night motels. everybody minds their own business and its not like housekeeping gives a fuck what they find left behind as long as there isnt a huge mess. also deadbolts and chains on all the doors no fumbling with keycards or whatever just an actual key

As someone who does housekeeping, I can say is I always knock first. Unless there's a Do Not Disturb, then it's automatic hands off (which is a pain, you know how many people call to request stuff then leave the DND sign on). But if I do knock and don't get an answer I am free to enter.
