Should DC be its own state, with congressional representatives?

Should the inhabited land of DC be instead be returned to Maryland, making current DC residents into Maryland residents?

It should be incorporated into California, which should then be broken up into multiple states.

Sure, but I think in the process a few states should lose statehood and become districts or territories.

Worse than Puerto Rico....unlike PR, they pay all the usual federal taxes and such, with the exact same amount of representation (zero)

I'd be fine w/ either their own state, or considered part of Maryland again. VA got its half back, seems only fair. If they do that, then MD should definitely get more electoral votes and House seats to account for the population jump.
Keeping it separate would probably be less complicated, though.

Under the Tennessee Plan a bill must pass the US House of Representatives and US Senate and then must be signed by the President of the United States.

(from the first link)

Wait...so why the fuck didn't this already happen in 2009 when Dems had full control? I assumed you needed a higher majority than just 51%. So like...the second Dems have control of all 3 again, they should be good to go, right? 86% of the D.C. residents voted in favor of it, and it would've presumably happened already if Republicans weren't against anything that gives Dems more representatives, regardless of how justified it is...

Yeah but they didn't have enough people vote so the republican senate dismissed it. They are having another referendum this year so two states may be on the table now.

Literally the only reason to oppose this is if you think the side you want to win in elections won't win as often. Edit: Or if you have a fixation on the # of stars on the flag and get triggered at the thought of more being added, lol.

Americans are entitled to representation in the US legislature. If Hawaii gets it, so should Guam, Puerto Rico, DC, etc.

That's not really an argument. All people want to be represented by their government.

I could just as easily say that Alabama doesn't have the right to be a state because Alabama only wants representation for political power.

I'm generally against DC Statehood as the states should have an Accorded Neutral Territory for the legislature. I'm ok with PR and Guam getting their own stars, and maybe the rest of the island territories becoming its own combined state too.

I get the taxation argument with DC, but I think there's no easy solution there that doesn't turn the ground the legislature sits on into a political football.

Statehood for Washington, DC is constitutional:
The Constitution sets only a maximum size, ten miles square, for the federal district that is the Seat of the Government of the United States. Congress has the authority to redefine the borders of the federal district and shrink its size, as it did in 1846, when the portion west of the Potomac was returned to Virginia (now Arlington and Alexandria Counties.
Creating the new state will require a simple reduction in the size of the federal district to an unpopulated area which includes the US Capitol, the National Mall, museums, some federal office buildings, the White House, the Supreme Court, and major national monuments.

Or they could just cede the excess back to the states that gave it up as they did before. The only remaining argument for DC Statehood as it stands now amounts to making sure the Dems have a thumb on the scale.

so you just wanna ignore the fact that the residents are being denied their representative rights that this country was founded upon?

If conservatives are worried about a democratic thumb on the scale then maybe they should shift their party to be more in line with broadly popular views and take both of their damn feet off the scale when it comes to gerrymandering districts for electoral advantages

I've never read a single argument against it that didn't suggest the person typing had brain damage.

If you're really worried about having a neutral territory for the government (something no other country on Earth has an issue with), I would suggest shipping all the politicians off to Puerto Rico.

Did I fucking stutter when I said they can cede the rest of DC back to the states that gave up the land in the first place? Otherwise, the area outside the actual capitol district is a democratic plantation and you know it. You can't possibly shit on gerrymandering from one side of your mouth and support DC Statehood from the other without making yourself a hypocrite.

No.

The Federal District was originally carved out of Maryland and Virginia in order to not have the Capital in any state, granting them special privileges. Virginia eventually got its land back and there is still a giant square cutting through Maryland.

It is nothing more than a power grab by Democrats who are ignorant why Washington DC isn't part of a state at all (and the fact that no civilians other than Federal Workers were intended to even live there to begin with).

giving the residents of DC their constitutional rights is only advantage for democrats if people in DC vote that way

if conservatives dont like that, then they should get better at democracy

Again, are you just being wilfully ignorant at this point Mead? If the land went back to other states, they'd get their representation without an absurd 2 Senate seats plus Congressional representation for what? 16 blocks of urban areas? Making DC a state is ridiculous if you even weigh it against states like Rhode Island and Connecticut. The whole of the residential parts of DC are a sliver compared to even the biggest cities in the smallest states. You're being ridiculous here.
