I just watched the spin off with the other dude, it was pretty good as well. I tried to watch grandmaster but that got old fast.

Which one is with im as an old man, didn't he die of cancer? Also didn't see a prequel, but maybe they are not on netflix.

What is Ip Man about?

I believe his name was actually Yip, but for some reason everyone says Ip.

I always thought it was Eye PEE man lol, but then when I watched em I realized it was pronounced like yip but without the Y. Maybe it was prounanced that way WITH the Y and that is why they changed it to Ip.

Anyway it's based on the history of a real person who eventually trained bruce lee, and was a master of a form of kung fu (wind something?...can't believe I don't remember the name after watching freaking 5 movies about it).

It follows his history and how he became a grandmaster of that form.

It's kinda like rocky in some ways (some simularities), especially Ip man 2, but it's worth a watch.

Just strange so many people are watching em all right now.

The one with him as an old man was called Ip Man: the Final Fight. The prequel is called The Legend is Born. But apparently they aren't actually connected to the other movies.

Ahh thanks, I will look them up. Yeah there is another called Grandmaster (on netflix) which is about Ip man as well, but I don't like it as much. There is also The Legend of Bruce Lee which is a TV series about him on netflix (subtitled), which will involve him as well obviously (since he trains bruce lee and it's a series that is far more in depth even going into his cha cha stuff, why he started to learn martial arts etc).

I did like the main series, even the spin off, wish there was more but I think they pretty much ran out of options.

I can't remember which one - but if you have seen Rocky IV - you have already seen one of the movies. It is identical except substitute USA vs Russia with China vs England? I think it was England or Austrailia or some other english country other than the USA.

Yeah it's the British which are generaly the big bad in the movies, and it's IP man 2.

Watching the Bruce Lee series on netflix takes a very diff view/approach to Ip man though.

All movieness aside, Donnie Yen is a trained mixed martial artist and wing chun is really that good of fighting style. I know they are highly choreographed fights but the core concepts of wing chun are very practical in a fight.

In terms of where I'd rate it in relation to the other movies, I'd have to say 1 > 3 > 2 4 (I'd have to watch 2 again to be sure).

The racism and the arguments for why racism is bad is too on the nose, I feel like. Racists typically don't say blatantly racists things. They understand racism = bad, so they're more subtle about it. Like instead of mocking someone because of their skin color, they'd mock particular things of that race. The villain(s) of the movie all felt very one dimensional.

Fights were cool, though a bit formulaic. You always know the villain will defeat a master and then Master Ip will avenge them. That's just how it be.

Some story lines felt very underdeveloped or incomplete. Overall though, it was fine. I would not recommend it.

My friend convinced me to watch it (and thanks to the theater having assigned seating, the theater kicked us out of our seats when we tried to sit together).
