She had several of the symptoms (headaches, extreme fatigue, no smell or taste) but kept them to herself so she could keep working. It wasn't until she mentioned being ill to a coworker that it came to light. I never had contact with her, I work a different area but it's still the same property.

It was very wrong to hide it but our workplace is supposed to be paying attention here, checking us daily. I swear our management only cares as long as they have to. When we first reopened they were all over us about constant disinfection, about two weeks later, they stopped caring about it. Same thing with masks, they aren't watching for people without masks anymore. Hell the owners and their buddies don't even wear them.

Part of me wishes this would lead to another shutdown. It's the only way I'm going to get a rest. Since we reopened first week of June I have had 3 days off total. All these days as well as the constant threat of sickness and mid to upper 90 degrees every day and I am wiped. Although I'm fine financially at least. Between all the overtime pay, the fact I still have half my stimulus money, and my tax refund that is on the way I could go a month or two on all that.

They should fire her for that. Shes endangering others just so she can keep working.

If you come down with COVID, you should sue your job.

I think it's more the fact that they are often forced to keep working to survive/have a home/eat even if they really should stay home.

They 100% should have stayed home, but when it comes at a risk of your job, or being able to eat, many really feel like they have to just hope it's something minor and push on through.

When its that persons livelihood on the line, many will risk it for the biscuit even if it means others will suffer and die.

Many people put their needs before others and thats just the way it is.

Yeah, the Covid situation really highlights how precarious the average person's position is in the United States; sick people still need to eat and pay bills.

Believe me there is nothing I want more than a few days off. Unfortunately when we reopened half our shift didn't want to come back so we are short. It's perfectly legal here in Nevada, employers can work you as many hours as they want, as long as they pay the correct overtime. But I'm getting tired of the extra pay I want rest. I even asked for just one two-day weekend a month and was told no.

Situations like this are going to happen nationwide. We already have an epidemic of employees of specific industries hiding sickness to avoid losing pay. Now imagine that, but with a highly contagious illness.

not without jumping through hoops. you've got to have a "valid medical reason", or the business has to be shown to have violated OSHA rules (forcing people to work in an intentionally unclean/unsafe environment).

if you quit, and claim you did so because covid, they're likely to tell you that you dont qualify for unemployment.

My brother got covid back at the end of April from the restaurant he works at, and as a result, he passed it along to my mom, who watches his 1 year old a few days a week while he works.

A girl who works at the restaurant had missed a few days. When my brother questioned management if she was ok, he was told she just had a slight cold and would be back soon. About a week later, management told everyone she had covid. When my brother called her to see how she was doing, she said shes told management from the beginning that she had a 103F fever, coughing, trouble breathing, and loss of smell/taste. All of the glaring symptoms, and yet management told them she had a slight cold.

Thankfully, both my brother and mom are fine. But after all that, when my brothers test results finally came back positive (10 days after he was tested, and he was by then symptom free after quarantining himself from his family), his wife (who works for the same company, but a different location) asked if she should return to work or if she needed to quarantine/be tested. She was told that since she had no symptoms, she should continue to work as scheduled.

And we wonder why this shit is spreading like crazy...

Considering that estimates of asymptomatic carriers are up to 45% of those infected, those are some crappy odds for the workplace to assume everything is fine.
