I want to complete a puzzle(probably 500 pieces to make sure I can do it in 5 days. I'd do 1,000 but I am not great at puzzles) and just leave it there unannounced.

However it has to have some sort of weird/creepy image, and I am not sure what.

I think the house owners will think this is hilarious when they get back and see like a completed 500 piece killer clown puzzle hanging out on their living room table when they get back.

any ideas?

This one shot to the top of the list because of how random it would be.

Maybe this idea isn't as hilarious as I thought it would be. I also can't find too many weird or creepy looking puzzles out there unless I straight up just went with things that arent necessarily creepy like a portrait of Trump or those half naked little kid angels and shit.

Pretty much. Doesn't matter if the image is creepy, the origin of the puzzle is obviously you.

Now if you hide a mannequin in their closet or something that'd be funny. Might get a scare, definitely get a wtf.

Of course the origin of the puzzle is me, but they won't know beforehand and I don't think i'll even be there when they get home.

again, perhaps I over estimated how funny this would be, but to me this sounds funny.

I think you are overestimating how funny it'll be. The basic concept of doing something strange and unexpected that will throw them off is fine, but I get the impression that a puzzle was the most random thing you could think of and you've latched onto it without considering that it's not actually going to be that disarming for them. You'll get a "that was a weird thing to do" and a couple chuckles, but I'm not expecting much more than that. Odds are, their reaction will be more along the lines of "oh, I guess he did a puzzle while he was staying here and forgot to clean it up."

What you want is something that they won't necessarily notice immediately. Maybe something like hanging a creepy portrait in their bedroom, especially if you replace an existing picture with it so their eyes aren't immediately drawn to the conspicuous new thing. Ideally, you want them to notice it after they get into bed or in the middle of unpacking, if orienting it accordingly is an option.

If you had more time to work with, you could have sneaked a picture of their dog(s) dressed as a clown or a mime, have that picture custom-printed onto a 500-piece puzzle, and then solve that for them by the time they come back.

The puzzle is nice. But not much of a prank.

Here is a healthy one if you are not strapped on cash and willing to go out to a store personally. Buy a small litter box, some cat litter, and some tootsie rolls. Sand-garden the litter in the box, mold the candy into the cat litter, add small paw imprints, and a dash of litter outside the box. If the owners don't have a cat, they'll be confused and question if a cat got in the house. If they do have a cat, shape the candy in an artistic form.

Note: keep litter box of candy away from dog.
