I still remember 12 years ago I stumbled onto The Good the Bad and The Ugly on there. Never really seen an old movie. But it had 4 stars on the guide thingy and I had nothing going on that night so I was like, fuck it, let's watch an old 3 hour western.

Mind completely melted at the showdown (RIP Ennio Morricone) and I decided I should watch the other 4 star movies on there and eventually found out which directors and actors I wanted to see more of. Got exposed to the Criterion Collection and foreign/arthouse movies since they have a close relationship. Good work, TCM.

Also they have cool logos and bumpers. No advertising which means they can swear and show nudity. Hell yeah.

Too bad no one has cable anymore and relies on streaming, which never carries old movies, and is causing us to lose our incredible artistic achievements to the sands of time!

tbh its insane to me that every streaming service doesn't have curation.

also hbo max would theoretically have an enormous library due to warner bros but... not much is on there. same with disney owning fox. why is it not all on d+ or hulu? dumb!!

By far, the two things I miss most about cable are The Weather Channel and TCM. I always loved watching Robert Osborne introduce films, R.I.P.

bob was the GOAT.

alicia malone said leigh brackett was a man! she and dave karger don't have the presence that bob did. or that ben mank has now. i also really like eddie mueller aka the czar of noir who does noir alley on saturday nights. jacqueline stewart is really smart but doesn't deliver her silent sunday intros that well imo.

didn't like mank ten years ago but i've warmed up to him. he's a bro.

Sling TV has TCM.

Also, I'm sure you would dig ShortsTV. No ads. No censorship. No running their content past Chinese censors. Just a wide variety of short films from around the world. Good shit too.

It also sucks to pay more for 11 streaming services to get less than with cable. The same companies you said no to have hooked everybody again, only worse.

love TCM its basically the only channel I watch when I use my tv. Protip: if you do have A tv package with tcm you have access to most of their catalogue through their app.

im sad that whenever I would request them to show a movie it would literally be on at 3 am. Wanted to see War and Peace with Audrey Hepburn

i also think a lot of stuff that has aired in the past 2-4 weeks is available on the app for a short time

tcm is airing some skiing themed movies early tmrw before moving on to the last day of john ford fridays (theme they've done all month). how the west was won, co-directed with two other directors and shot in cinerama, is playing. then making mr right and vibes for tcm underground.

summer under the stars begins today. all august tcm dedicates each day to a movie star. not sure i'm a huge fan of summer under the stars. generally at least half the month is dedicated to enormous stars whose movies play all the time. probably the worst month for tcm programming all year besides 30 days of oscar in february (dedicated to only showing oscar nominated movies).

anyway... today is barbara stanwyck day.

she was an orphan at age 4 and was pretty much committed to becoming a famous actress. became a ziegfeld girl at 16 and hit broadway not long after. got her first starring role in 1930 and immediately became a huge success. in the early 1940s she was the highest paid woman in the united states. won an honorary oscar in the 80s after never winning a competitive one, although a lot of people argue she should have won for double indemnity (airing tonight). her femme fatale character in double indemnity in general is considered among the best female characters in cinema history.

reasons not to worship your idols: she supported huac and hated fdr! also a big ayn rand fan!

kinda bummed about summer under the stars. reviewing the schedule they only have one primarily silent actor and one primarily foreign film actor.

their general schedule is
morning and day time: themed movies all day
prime time: 3-4 themed movies
saturday morning: cartoons and serial episodes
saturday night: noir movie followed by two "underground" movies aka exploitation, horror/action/scifi b-pictures, generally 1970s or later movies
sunday night: one silent movie and two foreign movies

now we get none of this for a whole month sigh

Seen some strange shit on TCM Underground.

Liked the Noir Alley stuff.

No cable anymore though.

Now I just watch what the antenna pulls up.

Now I just watch Grit TV.
