House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Tuesday that Democrats are willing to agree to a new coronavirus stimulus package that doesn't include an extension of an extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits, saying the party's position is not "$600 or bust." In four days, the extra benefits are set to expire for millions of Americans who have been receiving them amid the coronavirus pandemic. Democrats and Republicans are currently divided over how to continue supporting Americans economically affected by the crisis, with no clear path to a deal in sight. "Look, it's not $600 or bust. ... (House Speaker Nancy) Pelosi said the other day, which I thought was a great line: 'We don't have red lines, we have values.' We're going into these negotiations with values," Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, told CNN's John Berman on "New Day." He continued: "To say that $600 or nothing, no, that's not where we are. We're prepared to discuss this. But we're also not prepared, however, to let down the American people, to let down the states, the cities, the local governments who hire people, who are meeting this pandemic's crisis, including health personnel."

It seems like that's their strategy, not dying over the $600 hill but still getting people something.

easy way for pelosi to handle this situation. just point out that while democrats have control of one part of the legislature, the rest of the government is completely controlled by repuglicans. reference the years of obstructionist repuglican bullshit during obama's term, and the self serving legislation they did when they controlled everything (when they could even come to an agreement within their own party...). remind voters that while it would feel great to be vindictive assholes and pull the same obstructionist bullshit, they still feel responsible to their electorate and as such have to pass something to get as much help to them as the repuglicans will allow...

then remind every voter that all this will change if they vote blue in november.

I just think the problems would be cleared if it was capped at 100% of your last salary or something of that nature, but hey, glad some really impoverished people got a little extra for once.

There's still a ton of people that haven't even received their first payment from unemployment and filed back in March and April. If it's taking them that long with a set rate across the board, I can't imagine how much more time it would take to review every single individual case and adjust it accordingly. I don't think it would be possible at a percentage rate, and I think the state unemployment offices already said they do not have the resources to do something like this. People would be waiting a year for their first check and it's already too late.
