They gave us two antibiotics and a dewormer to give her for the next couple of weeks -_-.

Then I called my primary vet to reschedule an appointment I had this week and they said they'd have to review the medications to see if they concur... feel like I'm playing the old mom and pop game.

Yeah. Sniper used to have a lot of care. Antibiotics, immunobooster, nutrition supplement, all twice a day on top of wound disinfectants.

I kinda miss it to be honest. Rivel a lot low maintenance lol, at the same time i happy she's as healthy as she can be.

So, why Rivel? The search I did on it returned "wrinkled" "dumpling". I figured that you might name her something related to Sniper (e.g., Spotter, though it is quite cheeky).

Ugh so we got our kitten this morning, they said she was fine, and she's been running around and jumping and playing and stuff and she's been breathing heavily for the last half hour -_- Average breathrate for a kitten is 20-40/48 depending on which source you check and we counted 54 breaths per minute.

Shit is making me nervous -_-

When is the last time she ate? Drink?

Basically the guideline according to my vet and several online articles i read (there sre variations depending on your cat age, size, breed):

More than 24-30 hours not eating or drinking
36 hours not peeing
72 hours not pooping.

Are all signs something is wrong.

Maybe don't let her too active yet? Keep her in a safe, smaller enclosure with food & litterbox

Maybe she just moved too much? She's still sick so the stamina might be lower and she gets pooped faster than healthy kitties. Still wish all the best.

idk it's been over an hour and a half and she's still got that strange breathing pattern that made us worry to begin with. But my wife is thinking we just need to give her some time and see how she does for the next week.

Ugh.

She seems to be doing fine, just played for a good hour and then came asking for food... and we did the *smart* thing this time and put the antibiotics *on* the food and she ate it just fine. Then she went after Mulder (a 12 pound cat) and started growling at him and tried to eat *his* food lol. We gave her a little more in her dish and nudged her over to her own dish and she was growling even more.

Mulder's eyes just got kind of wide like "what the heck" and he just kind of watched her. When we pulled Desi away he just went back to eating lol.

Scully is spending more time with us now but she still hisses at Desi whenever they get close and we have to monitor them to make sure they don't get into fights, which happened once now - thankfully nothing serious. Like this afternoon Desi was sleeping on her bed on the couch, Scully jumped up and got about a foot away from her (whenever they get this close I get towards the middle and have my arm extended to stop anything/scare them apart since the big cats are receptive to that)... smelled her for a few seconds then just hissed and ran away :(

I've got a cat story to share, it kind of went under the radar on CE a couple months ago but it's important to raise awareness

We had a kitten that we brought in after her mom disappeared, and named her Nova. She tested positive for feline leukemia, which isn't necessarily a death sentence but the odds are never in the favor of a cat with that diagnosis. But we gave her a chance at life anyway

She was a rowdy kitten, but extremely sweet, just like her mom before her. We had her about a year, when we noticed a really strange breathing pattern. It was sort of labored, and you could see her entire chest contract when she breathed.

So we took her to the vet, they found some fluid near her heart, and gave us some antibiotics and a steroid shot. About a day later, she was pretty much back to normal, with no strange breathing.

Fast forward a week, and it's back to how it was before, maybe a little worse. We decide to bring her in for an emergency visit on memorial day, and that's when shit goes horribly wrong.

They xray her, and put her on oxygen. By this point, her entire chest cavity was filled with fluid, keeping her lungs from expanding. The vet recommends letting her go, and my fiance and I take a minute to talk while we finish smoking. Before we could even let it sink in though, the vet came back out to tell us she had collapsed and passed away.

The final diagnosis ended up being a rare mutation of the feline coronavirus, known as FIP. It causes fluid to build up in the chest and abdominal cavity, with a near 100% fatality rate. This mutation is most common amongst cats that test positive for feline leukemia, which is an immunodeficiency disorder.

Always get your cats tested and vaccinated for feline leukemia. We risked our other cats lives by bringing her in, even though they were vaccinated, so be sure you're always very mindful of that going forward.

Dude I've been reading about FIP since we adopted Desi and that shit is terrifying. Some sources say it can manifest even years after the initial viral infection and that is terrifying.

I am really sorry for your loss, Marquee.

Also on a totally unrelated note, I smoke. And when we were at the animal hospital on Friday night at midnight, there was at least one person in each car waiting in the parking lot that got out to smoke a cigarette >_> Thought that was really strange, since it's sort of a dying trend.

I think i read that you really can't introduce cats right away. Swap scents before them actually meeting like maybe let each check out the other's pillows or something like that.

For something that is almost always a death sentence, it feels like the average person you run into hasn't even heard of it. And the research for a cure seems to have gone almost nowhere. It sucks. The important thing is that we gave Nova the absolute best year of her life. She was unquestionably spoiled lol

I hope everything pans out for everyone's kitties. They're all diamonds

My cats Neffy (black/white) and Osiris (grey) decided to get fleas last week ._.

I dunno if you guys have ever had a cat with long hair but let me tell you, when they get fleas, they get it hard. I think it's mostly because you don't notice it until it's too late, due to the fleas hiding deep in the layers of fluff.

Woke up one morning to find BOTH of them had ripped out chunks of fur on their necks and made it bleed. Investigating their back paws, I found the clumped up hair - so they'd been itching so much they cut themselves and pulled hair out :(

This happened last time they had fleas so I got straight on it. Quarantined them to one room to keep them clear of the house whilst we hoover/treat the rooms.

Then comes the hard part... Shaving them :( It's impossible to get flea medication to work and impossible to flea comb a long haired cat.

They look so silly now when you're used to them being big floofs :(

Good news is, the flea comb is already coming out clear, no signs of eggs, fleas or flea waste.
My cat is really short haired thankfully. The vet was kinda surprised when i took her the first tim there is no signs of any fleas, but we still gave her one for precaution.

Yeah, my sister gives her cat flea medication monthly as a preventive. I think I need to start doing the same.

Up until March, I lived with them in a flat that wasn't ground level so they never had outdoor access. They got fleas maybe twice in three years there - probably carried in by me/a guest.

However, we upgraded to a house and we have a garden they love to go in. ALSO, I totally forgot till now, they have a neighbour cat that comes and visits. It sits outside that door you can see in the picture on a bench and they sit there and watch each other and play through the window.

Maybe it was him who gave them fleas!

CE needs additional cat tax of them completely shaved!!

The litter isn't soft and cozy like the blanket.

I think Desi might be a so-called "Wobbly Kitty" - I thought it was just because she spent so much time in cramped spaces in shelters but she's been running a ton and exercising and still has funky balance issues. It's pretty cute though.

@Ruvan22 We're not 100% sure if it's because she's a kitten or if she has a legit medical disorder. Apparently there are a few different causes of this ataxia (balance/coordination issues). Since we discovered she had three fractured ribs... well, I don't know what caused that but I'm also wondering if the same incident caused injury to her nervous system or something :( Cats with this generally live normal healthy lives though, and sometimes they can overcome it just depending on the circumstances.

Yeah, in your care he should be safe. Animals like these won't survive in the wild but with caretakers they should live relatively normal and happy life.

Godspeed to his recovery

Rivel is doing mighty fine. Today we had an accident where i didnt pay attention when playing with her. I was sitting on the floor and she was chasing feather stick and i put it near my thighs and she pounced missed and accidentally scratched my thighs instead lol. Poor cat was surprised to i think. I didn't yell or even say ouch. She just backed away slowly and looks like she know she didn't mean it lol.

@apolloooo She's weird lol. We have to watch her more closely when she's alone with Scully but she gets along pretty well with Mulder - worst he's done so far has been a soft slap on the top of the head, but he doesn't put his claws out and 99% of the time he's not even aiming to hit her. We have a cat bed on another couch in the living room and Mulder often sleeps there now, and she went over there last night while he slept on my legs. After a while he decided to get up and went to the other couch... was worried there'd be a fight but he wound up just lying down next to the bed.

I'm glad they're getting along better since it means less stress and at least with Mulder they are starting to play together more and more.

She wants to go outside at night ofc i wont allow her lol. I thought she just want to explore outside the room so i opened my room but she keep meowing at the front door. I asked around the best course is just to ignore her and it probably would stop in few days or weeks if i am unlucky.

This is what she does to get my attention lol

Oh yeah when we started letting Scully out (for brief periods of time and under supervision) she started getting feral, started using plants as a litter box and even to this day she scratches at the back door to try to get out sometimes.

Not much you can do about it but eventually they settle down and realize you're not gonna let them out.

That is a really cute kitty.

I like how comfortable she is loafing! Have you thought about getting a harness to take her outside briefly? I can see a cat that has grown up outdoors being eager to see the outside again... I even read some would look around and then "nope" back into the climate controlled/ food/petting house
