Skylanders

Well I guess it influenced the whole Toys to Life genre, but that entire genre has been dead for like 4-5 years now.

Gran Turismo is a ridiculous answer to this question. Gran Turismo 5 is the second-best selling PS3 game of all time. Gran Turismo 6 is the tenth-best selling PS3 game of all time.

According to Wikipedia, the sixth best-selling PS one game is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - that's my answer.

I feel like Resistance/Killzone was the right answer to this question. Destiny could be but I know too many people who play it personally.

I also agree the question doesn't really pair well with Avatar as the comparison.

Do Farmville and Words with Friends count?

Ok, probably not Farmville because it's still cited as the token "Facebook game" even if people have seem to have forgotten about those altogether.

Commercially I feel like the answer is definitely some Wii shovelware game.

Critically is tougher. THPS2 is #2 on Metacritic all time, but maybe I'm revealing my personal experience when I say I don't really hear anything about it these days. Scrolling a bit further down... LittleBigPlanet?

theyre remaking THPS 1 & 2 and people are very excited for it. I think the people who cared about the game then generally still care about it now, its very memorable and nostalgic.

I would like to point out the trucking/flight/farm simulators that are super niche but make bazillions of dollars off bazillions of DLC

I was never into it and I dont think any of my friends were either, so I dunno if people who did like it have some kind of nostalgia for the fad like how I have nostalgia for Tomagotchis or something.

Someone said Crysis earlier and that seems the perfect choice if we're going for an Avatar equivalent. Lots of attention upon release, a technical powerhouse, but I know nothing beyond its milestone status. It seems like people are generally positive about it? But not enough to keep it in the conversation. A lot of the other stuff here I definitely know people who love, but I've never heard Crysis mentioned beyond the initial graphical discussion despite having sold a few million copies.

Terraria? The game that has the 4th-highest all-time active player count on Steam which it achieved just 3 months ago, an entire nine years after the game's original release? That's an objectively wrong answer.

I guess so, but I just never hear anyone talk about them anymore. Maybe I'm just out of the loop

I still see "But can it run Crysis" jokes every now and then. Plus it just had a remaster released a few weeks ago.

If you want a forgotten game, then Crysis 3 might be a better shot. Or, to give it its full title, Crysis 3: Wait, There Was A Crysis 2?

But then, the sequels were never popular.
