A game that sold a bunch and might have even reviewed well, but no one cares anymore, it didn't influence anything, and it's hard to remember it exists. Basically the game equivalent of Avatar.

Nintendogs? Gran Turismo? Dragon Age 3 maybe?

Maybe like the Resistance series? A pretty high profile PS3-exclusive series for the time but it's been MIA for ages and wasn't different enough to be all-that influential or memorable. Insomniac plain seems to have abandoned the franchise to focus exclusively on Ratchet & Spider-Man.

Probably a Killzone or Resistance

This one is a little controversial but GTA IV is way up there too. The only thing anyone EVER talks about this game for is bowling with cousin Roman even though it sold tens of millions of copies

People have been wishing hard for a successor game. Within the past few years, something came out to fill the void a bit with Wargroove. I picked it up recently in the summer sale and it's pretty clearly a love letter to the AW series.

I can't think of the most likely candidate for 'good but forgotten game', although one I loved that I wish would see more games like it is Freelancer.

I like this answer. The only reason it sold even half as much was because it came with a free Wii Remote anyways.

That being said, I don't think Avatar's the best movie to liken a game to for this topic. If nothing else, it's the reason most blockbusters are still released in 3D to this day even though most developed countries don't care about the format anymore.

advance wars is a terrible answer lmao. some of the biggest switch indie games sold purely on the buzz of "being advance wars"

i see wii play talked (or, more often, memed) about a fair bit more than wii party... but also i didn't know it sold that much better so it's still a pretty good answer

gran turismo is also not forgotten, it just fell out of favour. i don't think people that played them back on ps1 or 2 just ignore the impact they had

anyway

Resistance and Wii Play are particularly great answers. Chip's Challenge might qualify as well. That game was a BFD among early gaming publications and found a wide audience on PC, but was basically memory-holed after the turn of the millennium.

I've gotta mention The Conduit, too. Remember when that was supposed to be the UBER 1337 shooter that'd make the Wii a respectable system among hardcore gamers? So many people pinned their hopes on that game.

Depends on how forgettable is forgettable. I feel like my first reaction to the way I'm interpreting the question is Assassin's Creed. Not exactly flying under the radar, and still having games released, but it's the hardcore gamer equivalent of Madden.

So, on that note, the answer's probably Madden.

It's not Nintendogs, are you kidding? Nintendogs was huge. And has a stage in Smash Bros. Kawashima's floating polygon head is in that too. Wii Play makes more sense, as the hardware version of "Buy this demo and get a free game". But the sequel is even more forgettable, assuming it was successful.

Not sure of the gaming answer to this question, but I don't think Avatar matches the title description well from the movie side of things. It was hugely influential in proving that every theater in the world needed to be able to play 3D films and that they could make serious money (which they did for the next few years) and is the reason action movies were still being put out in 3D right up until COVID killed the industry.

It also spawned a theme park and five (or something?) sequels, though they keep getting delayed.

I feel like its something like Killzone

killzone theoretically sold well, they made a bunch of games, but have you ever actually seen a Killzone fan? If there isnt a new Killzone game on the PS5 will anyone care?

also a more direct analogue to Avatar might be Crysis? It was kind of a big deal but mostly just notable for technical reasons rather than the actual quality of the game.

I dont think this a great answer for the question because its not even that Game Party is forgettable, its that we were never even aware of it in the first place.
Its less like Avatar and more like Sing, an animated movie about singing animals that came out four years ago and made over 600 million dollars. Game Party was just some ephemeral product targeted at kids.

I think the game equivalent of Avatar needs to have had some hype at some point and been a big deal at the time of its release, but now have very few people who are actually passionate about it.

I actually think Nintendogs is a pretty good answer - in the year that Nintendogs was released, the game was a HUGE cultural phenomenon, like, everyone had to have Nintendogs, it was a big, hot ticket item, and while it's a fine game by all measures, the hype for it didn't last much longer than that, there isn't a huge fanbase for Nintendogs anymore, and while it has influenced some trends in marketing it hasn't really been all that influential to the broader culture or the state of the art. Not saying that to be mean or anything, I just think that's a pretty straightforward thing to say about Nintendogs and I think it kinda describes Avatar. Fine, did influence some marketing practices (the constant release of 3D films for a while), but I wouldn't say has a very large cultural footprint.

I mean, if you replaced 'game' with 'movie' in the topic title, Avatar would be quite a questionable answer for previously cited reasons, even before getting into non-Western perspectives. Taking the title at face value, Game Party is an even better answer than Wii Play. However, that's a rather different subject from the video game equivalent of Avatar, and it's admittedly confusing to have KP conflating the two.
