Im liking 2. KH1 I played on Proud and it just felt super unfair at times. Thank god you can skip cutscenes in the remaster

KH1 had one of the best combat systems in the series to me. Certain enemies and bosses require swell times guards and dodges, magic and tactics. You had more playstyles you could use in certain confrontations like playing hyper offensively, defensively or very passive, Donald and goofy had a wealth of customization options and guard was actually useful.

Another thing I liked was the lack of recovery, in KH2 you just smack a button after being hit and you're right back in. No need or time to think of the mistake you made or even what happened, just atk, atk, atk, action command, and atk atk and atk some more.

I only played the original KH2, no final mix version with the data fights. Where the closest thing I remember being a challenge I remember was sephiroth, equipping the berserker skill and wasting half his HP in the infinite combo it allows before he finally escaped.

You can make KH2 pretty challenging. Even ignoring the secret bosses which can be pretty tough even on lower difficulties, Critical Mode is something more games should actually do. Instead of just making the enemies deal more damage and you deal less, it does the following:

• Enemies deal 2x damage.
• Sora deals 25% more damage.
• You get +2 HP and +5 MP each level up instead of +5 and +10, meaning your maximum HP and MP are lower.
• You gain 25% less XP.
• You essentially start the game with the Reaction Boost, Finishing Plus, Draw, 2x Lucky Lucky, MP Hastera and No Experience abilities.
• You start the game game with 50 AP.
• You get +3 AP instead of +2 when it increases.

You might notice that No Experience ability. It's entirely possible to beat the game at level 1 if you're good enough.

Too bad the handheld KH games just made Crit mode harder than proud and that was it.

BBS literally was just Proud mode with half health. You start with more command slots but all that does is make the beginning a little bit easier.

Re:coded enemies deal even more damage, always inflict status effects (as opposed to 50-70% chance on proud or 0-50% on standard) and attack far more often (.6x delay between attacks vs .8x delay on proud)

Crit on DDD is just the most bullshit thing. Especially when you have no iframes while in Flowmotion, and Flowmotion itself gets triggered by slightly grazing some objects.

I died so many times just because I hit a wall while dodging an enemy and automatically got sent into a Flowmotion, allowing the enemy to 1hko me.

I like KH1, lots of nostalgia there.

KH2 put me to sleep and i didnt know/ care about many of the worlds, i quit early. Also 1 has way better music.

Plus you can repeat the fight without using an earlier save.

I tried to play KH1 a couple years ago and I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I got about halfway through the game, but the controls/camera are too clunky and I wasn't enjoying it. The nostalgia for the game was not strong enough for me even though I played it multiple times when it first came out.

I moved onto KH2 and had no problems playing it.

I still need to play KH3 at some point, but for whatever reason I'm not super eager.

It's not that bad, but as a fan it was a huge letdown after like 5 games of build up. If you don't like the story anyway and are skipping cutscenes, it probably won't matter.

There is one game play system I really dislike, but the game also has some good points. Idk if it's been changed, but the "floaty" controls are kinda annoying as well.

It's better to ask what's not wrong with Kingdom Hearts 3. Convoluted plot, cringe worthy dialogue, awful writing, the omission of several series staple features, missed opportunity with some of the worlds, one of the worst worlds in the entire series, all the story taking place at the end of the game(poor pacing), annoying attractions in gameplay, etc.

I've replayed many of the KH games multiple times throughout my life. I like the series a lot. I will never replay Kingdom Hearts 3.

I personally can't say how good KH3's game play is because I never did a Crit run. But idk, it may say enough on its own that I've done at least one Critical run on every other game in the series aside from the mobile games. I've also 100%'d every game in the series on at least one platform/ difficulty.

Except for KH3.

Believe it or not, it is so much worse in 3. Like, 1 and 2 are bad but I still like them anyway. 3 does to new lows even by KH standards. It's kind of amazing.

I mean it is a culmination of all the prior games so that's to be expected. The real problem is how they try to squeeze all the resolution rapid-fire at the end of the game after 25 hours of meandering.

KH3's story isn't that bad on its own. It's the fact that it has to follow up on the previous games; they're the ones that are stupid and convoluted.

Actually, I guess I should say its story isn't that convoluted on its own. On its own, it's still pretty bad.

It's so bad it's draining to even get through.

The problem isn't even that it has to wrap up 5 other games worth of plot threads, it's that it just doesn't know how to tell a story in general.

The dialogue is not bad because it's cringey typical KH stuff -- "light, darkness, etc" -- but because the characters never say anything worthwhile or interesting, the pacing is awful, no character has any actual agency or screentime, plot points get introduced simply to promote other games, and then they try to cram every other plot point into the last couple hours. It's clumsy and just fails on basic levels of storytelling. You're left feeling why you even bothered to watch the cutscenes.

The whole thing feels like a rough draft of a script that somehow made its way into the actual game without anyone noticing.

3 felt legit dumb in cutscenes. You can't fathom how near 20 years of building on the KH platform, hiring experienced actors, and surely having the funds for a proper playwright, resulted in... That.

I legitimately finished the story mode just to get the game over with

Unpopular opinion:
Kingdom Hearts 1 is by far my favorite game in the series.

Sure, some of the controls are a little janky, but the worlds are so much more fleshed out than they are in later games, the story, while still wacky, is relatively straight forward and ties more directly in with the Disney stuff, tons of dope hidden shit, and to me is just more fun all around.

Yeah, the gameplay only becomes good with Critical mode and the patches they released this year alongside the DLC.

On release, it was weenie hut jr mode. I think I only ever died once, because I didn't understand the pirate ship minigame.
