She defeated Rep. William Lacy Clay, who has represented the district since 2001(succeeding his father, one of the cofounders of the Congressional Black Caucus, who first won election in 1968). Bush came to prominence protesting in Ferguson, is a registered nurse, and recently survived a bout of COVID-19. She was endorsed by an array of progressive groups, including Justice Democrats, Democratic Socialists for America, and The Sunrise Movement as well as by Sen. Bernie Sanders. She had previously challenged Clay in 2018, when she was one of the subjects of the documentary film Knock Down The House, which also featured Amy Vilela, Paula Jean Swearinger, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The district encompasses most of St. Louis, so it is a virtual certainty she will cruise to election in the fall.

In other news, Rep. Rashida Tlaib crushed her primary challenger.

It mentions it in the article, but it's worth emphasizing that that seat has been held by the Clay family since 1968. That's 50 years and change. Political dynasties are not okay.

That's a disingenuous way to describe it. Two people from the same family does not make a dynasty.

Yeah, it's a bit gross how there's several seats in congress being held by the children or spouses of former members.
Are you of the opinion that the children of people who are elected to government office should be barred from running for office themselves?

Yeah she definitely ticks off all the boxes of someone that I really want to root for. I was honestly completely unaware of her until I heard of this news. I will have to look more into her to know for myself if she is the real deal or not. I'm just way too jaded about politics these days.

I'm generally in favor of more turnover in Congress if nothing else. We need more people in Congress who truly feel beholden to their constituents.

Honestly watch Knock the House down on Netflix.

It's an okay documentary and it focuses too much on AOC, obviously since she actually won. But Cori Bush is featured a lot as well and you can tell she is actually trying to make a difference and trying to work for her community.

Really all four of the women profiled are like that.

Paula Jean Swearinger is also running this cycle too. For Senate, in West Virginia, so she's almost certainly doomed, but you gotta try.
