Beat em up. It's pretty simple but you also constantly get new moves.

While it traditionally is a beat 'em up, the newest game is a turn based RPG.

It's mostly listening to (reading) a bunch of yapping and sometimes you hit stuff

Even on hard yakuza 0 was pretty easy. Its a narrative focused beat em up. If you arent into story based games you probably wont like it

Most of the time its a beatemup/brawler
But the boss fights are generally 1 on 1

Its a plot heavy series, in a good way because the plot is good.

Only played Yakuza 0 but its one of the few games as of late where I was legitimately engrossed in the story. The gameplay was great as well. Great gameplay and great story is such a rarity it feels like.

It varies a lot in the subseries too. Like the two samurai ones Kenzan and in Ishin have hand to hand combat, but the emphasis is on sword play, or Ishin sword and gunplay. Kenzan and Ishin also play quite a bit differently. The PSP games were made by some company that did wrestling games (I haven't played the wrestling games though) and features a fighting game like system, but honestly I really disliked the first PSP game, and the system falls apart quickly. The Fist of the North Star one has a lot of moves from the manga/anime and is a lot of fun in my opinion.

Now the newest one is a full on RPG that is turn based and has a job system but with situational actions based on the environment. The difficulty is kind of hard to say. If you pick the hardest difficulty you can get a bit of a challenge on most of them, but it seems almost always terribly balanced. And by that I mean when you are first learning the game it's very hard, so you really get destroyed a lot early on. Then once you learn the game you also start getting overpowered and so by the end it doesn't matter because your skills are meaningless when you're destroying everything with your OP stats and abilities. This is almost universally true for the difficulty. Also you often end up abusing the bad AI in boss fights for some of the earlier titles because it's hard not to.
