http://braid-game.com/#about

There's a trailer on this page, and the write-up is fairly long, but totally worth reading. The amount of work and detail going into the commentary sounds honestly heavenly, especially for someone like me who really enjoys learning about the intricacies of game design. The new art assets look really really nice too.

Overall I'm fuckin stoked. Will definitely be buying this on release.

The thing I'm always most curious to see when it comes to games like Braid which have a big "twist" ending or secret meaning is whether it just retells the exact same story or whether it adds/changes things to completely change the context of the story beats.

Real talk: I never played Braid but I've read single line sentences of the story that kinda gives something away (no context for me to attach it to the game though).

Is it actually good? Or was it "good for its time"?

It's quite good imo. Kind of a similar mindset to Portal, where you have to recontextualize the world with the abilities the player has in order to solve the puzzles. The story is a little heavy handed, but the gameplay is there along with excellent graphics and music so it's really no biggie. I've 100%'d it a few times. One of my favorites

Is there a particular reason it's called the Anniversary Edition? the 13th year anniversary seems like a rather arbitrary one to celebrate.

That wasn't a jigsaw piece, that was one of the special secret glowy things wasn't it? The jigsaw pieces were all obtainable through normal methods iirc

Edit: stars. They were stars, not glowy things

It's so good and immune to the harrows of aging that I'm not sure why it even needs a remaster. But I'm not done reading yet.

It was a Star, not a puzzle piece.

Still, though. Is anyone really asking for this? The game plays perfectly fine right now.

Did Jonathon run out of ideas after The Witness?

I don't know, the improvements that they're making to the game based on this write-up and the commentary they're adding seems like it'll be totally worthwhile. I'm def buying it.

Of course it was natural to think of doing commentary in a re-release like this. I wish more games had good developer commentary in them. But as I think about the games that have commentary, my impulse is, I want to push this a lot further. I want to go much deeper into the subject matter than developers usually do; I want to say stuff that really gets to the heart of why things are the way they are, rather than just saying some surface stuff for the sake of doing commentary, as often happens. I want to cover all subjects involved in the game -- art, programming, game design, level design, history of independent games, whatever else -- and if you want a high-level, short explanation, you can get that, but if you want a 20-minute-long explanation of why a particular puzzle is the way it is, you can get that too. You can follow particular threads of commentary spatially, through wormholes that go from level to level, to see examples of particular concepts; the commentary has lots of markup so we can circle stuff on the screen, point arrows at whatever visual detail we are talking about, show diagrams, play back recordings of gameplay to show what happens if you try doing this or that in a particular level ... and many other capabilities.

Fuck YES this is exactly what I wanted back when I first got this game. Yes. Fuck. Mark my words, this will be touted in game design classes.
