I've spent the last 3 months going hard back on my anger towards Biden purely for Trump's absolute nightmare of an existence, and have been very open about it. This was one of the very few things that could have happened to cause me to hesitate back to my previous stance.

Trump is going to get even worse than he is now for me to put in a ballot with a cop on it. I've thrown away enough of my personal beliefs by deciding to give up and vote for Biden in the first place.

Difficult to put into words how much defund the police currently makes up my political viewpoint.

I think it's a significantly more important issue than Covid.

Harris had a better response on "defund the police" than most, so I'm not fully sure how that makes sense, let alone enough so for you to not care if the guy that wants the exact OPPOSITE of it stays in power.

I've mentioned it a number of times I felt it'd be repetitive to point to it again but yes, on The View early June just as calls for Defund were building into public consciousness and most politicians from Biden to Bernie were too nervous about the phrase as it was still viewed as complete political suicide, Kamala did indeed face questions about the movement by properly contextualizing it to be about resources better spent elsewhere

If she doesn't recognize that the rot arises from the system and not just police officers, she's not going to achieve any good results. One of the roots of the problem is that we are so eager as a country to elect former prosecutors who were "tough on crime." So she wants to defund a police officer putting his life on the line who has to make split second decisions, but reward career prosecutors who have plenty of time to make decisions and still decide to destroy people's lives over minor crimes or things that should not be crimes at all.

And Trump is not good on this issue. But at least he isn't a prosecutor.

Sorry, I misunderstood. That's a stance I can at least live with, I'll have to look into it all more. My honest opinion that is former law enforcement shouldn't even be eligible for office, so it's gonna be an uphill battle.

Look.

"Kamala is a cop" and "Vote Third Party"/"Don't vote" are very much the propaganda lines and have been for a long time. It really, really annoys me to see somebody falling for not just one, but both of them. Especially when we're talking about one of the most progressive voting records in the Senate (In addition to having probably the single best response of any federal politician on "Defund the police", as SEP is explaining)

Basically, her stance is:

-Definitely against any additional money/police.
-Wants to redistribute atleast some of the funding they already get to education, housing, and so on.
-Wants improved training, more accountability, and bans on extreme uses of force.

It's a "compromise" platform, but virtually nobody is actually running on a straight up "Literally defund" platform, and it's better than others that wanted to shovel more money in.

I think that (and Biden's history of enacting "tough on crime" legislation) are actually going to make it easier for them to enact meaningful reform here. It makes it harder for them to be painted as radicals on the issue (basically the same reason Trump has to launder his accusations of Biden being radical through this whole "puppet of AOC" nonsense; no one believes that Biden is a radical himself).

I hear you and I agree with you. Abolition is not just a goal, but the key goal to reforming society in a way that benefits the common person.

Harris as president isn't ideal. But no abolitionist is going to become president any time soon, and Harris harms fewer people than trump. I'm not saying we should go strictly utilitarian here, but rather that if we're going to judge by units of harm, harris is our best bet for the current situation.

Presidents and other elected officials aren't going to get the job done that we need them to. Voting is only one piece of the work needed to get to abolition. But right now it's really fucking important, so we best step up.

One thing I wish fellow progressives would understand (some of them do!) the Presidency should not be our current goal. Local Office. That's where we need to start making real changes. State and Local elections. You can't shift the entire country to the left all at once. You have to do it gradually. It sucks, and it shouldn't be that way. But that's how it is. Shift local elections. Nationally, too much is at stake to just allow Donald Trump and his cronies to have unchecked power like he does. Refusing to vote won't teach dems a lesson that they need to let the left-wing of the party have more than table scraps. They'll dig in and appeal to conservatives and shift everything to the right. It didn't work in 2016, and it won't work in 2020. When we don't show up to vote, they see it as apathy. They see us as unreliable allies, and they decide not to bother appealing to us because no matter what they do, it won't be good enough. Voting for Biden/Harris isn't an implicit agreement to their stance on all issues. It's an agreement to shift things toward their direction, rather than Trump's. And I think it's very important to reject the direction Trump wishes to take us.

I have no great love for Joe Biden. I have issues with Kamala Harris. They both deserve their fair share of criticism. But I look at them, and I look at Trump/Pence, and I see a stark difference. There's hope of moving forward with Biden. There's no such hope with Trump, and there never will be. He will continue to demonize us. He will continue to belittle us. And he will do his best to shift the conversation ever to the right, so that even John Kasich seems liberal. He will divide us, and he will continue to use his power in the most corrupt ways imaginable. And even then, I don't think we can quite imagine how corrupt he can really be.

I think discussing their failures is important. At the same time, it's equally important that we vote for them. If they see they can win with more liberal policies, they will shift left. If they see that they can't win us over no matter what they do, they'll stay right where they are.
