Like, you want to know how the Republican Party is so effective at getting people to fall in line? Because they never tell voters they have to settle. They never tell voters they have no option but to vote for Republicans. People form that conclusion on their own.

The Democrats have spent so much energy telling people on the left to settle - demanding that they settle. It's basically an admission that their candidate is bad and it's a really bad strategy that just drives people away.

I'm calling what I see. If you disagree that Trump is financially better for workers than Biden, I'd be happy to hear how. I mean what Biden would realistically do (read: nothing), not what he is promising. Whereas Trump has already cut taxes for workers a lot. If we're going off of promises then I think Trump has promised so much economic growth/winning that he still wins, but then obviously that's an empty promise.

Republicans absolutely tell voters they have to settle. They nominated Donald Trump for crying out loud, and ran on a platform of "He's not Hillary and/or an evil Democrat". Republicans don't care about protecting workers, the poor, the middle class, or anything like that. Their entire platform is running on identity politics of "we're AGAINST group X, group Y, and group Z" in order to convince poor people that the rich need more money while they themselves are struggling. But at least outsiders are being hurt worse.

Okay let me rephrase. I am saving money if I am assuming a relatively high discount rate for money in the future vs money now. For instance, suppose I can make 10% per year with investments (or inflation runs at 10% a year, it's the same thing effectively). Then money now is worth 10% more than money next year. Money now is worth 2x the same money in 7 years. Money now is worth 4x the same amount of money in 14 years. I'd much rather pay 4 extra months in 15 years than 4 months now.

The actual effect is greater than this because I'll (hopefully) be better able to afford those payments in 15 years. A dollar is worth more to me than to a millionaire, even at the same point in time. And the actual benefit is even greater than that because the probability that all these student loans are forgiven within 15 years is not trivial. If that happens, unless the government is going to pay back to people who have already paid off the loans what they paid, with significant interest, every dollar paid toward student loans now represents a straight loss.

My number was based on how much more money I'll have in my bank account on January 1. Yes, you're right that it's too high in that the value of contributions to social security and student loan debt paydowns is not zero. But I think it actually is a lot closer to zero than to the face amount from an investment point of view.

And let's not forget reducing worker rights right under their nose! Especially for LGBT, but worker safety goes out the window as well! All in the name of saving their employer money so they will MAYBE give them the table scraps (Ha! Who are we kidding. The employer will keep those for themselves, but don't tell the minimum wage scrubs that!)

Trump cut taxes for virtually everyone except those with high SALT deductions. I think about 83% of the total amount went to the top 1%, which isn't great but you know, workers wouldn't have accepted that offer if the Democrats had made a better one. They didn't.

That's because conservatives will believe anything their party tells them. I don't think the DNC's message overall is "Settle for Biden", that's the progressive messaging on Biden. We live in a country where the political compass is tilted so far to the right that Joe Biden may just be one of the most progressive candidates we've ever had. For progressives, settling is the best we can do right now.

Fair. I guess what I should have said is that Republicans lie to their voters are treat them like idiots by promising that their racist moron nominee is a god who will Make America Great Again despite accomplishing nothing he promised (or anything at all, outside of a massive tax cut to the super rich), while Democrats, to their detriment, are realistic and treat the voters with more respect (very much undeserved) for their intelligence, and don't go out of their way to promise the moon like they're running for class president and want pizza in the cafeteria every Friday.

I don't dispute this is the message but I DO think a lot of GOP voters are settling.

If you ever read one of the 500 NYT pieces on Trump voters (don't do this I'm about to explain them all) there's always quotes upon quotes from people who think the Democratic platform will actually hurt them, or that they're very concerned about Trump but still feel obligated to vote, or the Christian evangelists who don't like Trump but on the other hand the Democrats are even more ungodly and we could really use more judges to stop abortion. It's taking a global pandemic to peel these people away (they still will probably come back though). I really don't think Trump has as many true believers as he and the media want us to think.

Hate to be the both sides guy but I guess it's very similar to Biden's "most progressive platform in history" thing

The primaries are one thing. That's absolutely a battle of ideas/vision and voting your heart. But once that's over and it's the general the cold reality is that there are only two outcomes and you can either make the pragmatic decision to assist in the better of the two outcomes or you can not.

I just don't think this is true, the team sports effect hits both major parties

There are probably MORE D voters that settle or just give up and don't vote at all but reluctant support still happens for Republicans. The disparity between Trump's approval rating and people who say they'll vote for him anyways shows this.

Yeah as a reminder, Michigan and Wisconsin were pretty widely thought of as pretty safe D states in 2016 beforehand just because they consistently went to the Dems (even though the margins were sometimes fairly close). Maryland is actually safe D, but I hope no one in like Minnesota is thinking that they can afford a protest vote this year.
