The animation looks very ahead of its time of release 32 years ago way better than many titles made in the late 90's and early 2000's, that bubble era budget I bet. Story started out pretty decent, lots of action that got a bit gory, good looking cyber punk esque scenery but man, the last 20 minutes of the move felt like a very NGE like clusterfuck. Heard many praises of this movie over the years and I personally think it is overhyped after giving it a watch, overall I would rate this movie a 7.5/10. Might have to rewatch it a couple of times or read the manga to further appreciate it I guess.

It blew up the anime VHS market in the US

The audience for anime back in the day wouldn't have exploded like it did without Akira

"Akira makes Bladerunner look like Disney world" looks like that is going to be my next watch to see if that's true.
