The first half hour is fairly insufferable, but it morphs into this pretty compelling and emotional gay romance somewhere in the middle. Personally, I don't really interpret it as a gay romance, and more of an exploration of a true and deep friendship that isn't governed by society's views of how a deep platonic friendship can be expressed. Which is kind of the message the whole movie goes for in my eyes, about how society and shame lead people to repress and change their behavior to be more accepted.
