I don't think this can be a one to one comparison given the advances in medical and other technology and the fact that the Spanish Flu was a very different disease. It hit the young and healthy hardest, sending their stronger immune systems into overdrive.

Thankfully those advancements happened and a virus that we knew nothing about almost a year ago is only going to kill less than 1% of the worlds population.

Re-openings were controlled on the state level, not federal level. Which is how it should be. A lot of rural America has been barely touched by the virus. It's predominantly large cities run by Democrats that have been most devestated by the virus.

If we're being honest here, I don't think these local politicians are necessarily to blame either, but trying to blame the federal government for Americans personally handling this virus horribly is even more stupid.

America is actually doing MORE to quarantine it's people than most of Europe at this point.

The issue isn't Trump, the issue is Americans are rebellious, don't respect authority, and are harder to control as a population.

Europeans don't have to deal with people armed with assault rifles marching on their offices telling them they aren't going to wear a mask and if they want them too, they dare them to put it on their face.

Europe didn't have multi-thousand person BLM rallies going on in all its major cities for weeks where people aren't socially distancing or wearing masks worth a damn.

Being a modern Republican isn't a specific ideological position. It's actually more of a collection of wrong world views, rooted in anti-intellectualism, conspiracy, resentment, anti-systems thinking, and ignorance. Some of those are stronger in some people than others, but they are the central factors. Trump speaks that language and embodies it, that's why he has the bases's undying loyalty. They can't admit they made a mistake and elected a dude so unfit that he's literally getting them killed and destroying their lives, so they double down and say we're actually being lied to and people just wanna blame Trump and nothing could have been done and we're actually doing fine and it'll disappear and it's not here in the first place.

That's why there seems to be no bottom to it, no consistency, no red-lines. As long as they're in the opposition to minorities, the libs, the experts, the culture setters, they will accept anything readily at this point. It doesn't matter if it kills them all. Our culture absolutely failed these people and it's kneecapping the entire country at every level.

The issue is, there's a lot of people who really need the president for guidance. Those people are simply not free thinkers. And if the president calls the virus a hoax, that's going to be millions of people out there who will think so too, and many of those people will not abide to the mask mandates for the sake of health concerns.

So yeah. While the virus itself isn't Trump's fault, it is definitely exploded because of him
