Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

this death doesn't have a death-touch or insta-kill AFAIK. from what's canon, unless i missed something big, he isn't unstoppable or overwhelmingly powerful

vsbattle is kind of iffy as that place is usually weird about power levels. Has he done this sort of thing? Either way this entrant seems kinda...off? Either he has auto kill(?) or is supposedly intangible and there isn't really a fight aside from him maybe making a hurricane? Do they ever deal with him or does he flex his power any other times or something?

Also Godzilla waltzed out of hell if that means anything

He's not really intangible and in the show he's generally bound. Some characters with certain powers or mythological ties I would definitely buy being able to restrain him and win. In the show he likes to make deals, so I could also see some characters making him an offer to kill a friend or something like that in exchange for his surrender.

If he can summon a hurricane he's got can throw around serious energy though, and Godzilla is not one who will be able to win. Death, even if people are overrespecting him a ton in this context

"Hurricane" is a bit of an understatement. It was meant to completely destroy Illinois and that would just be the beginning, plus his scythe is pretty scary.

I did more research and he did use the touch of death on people in passing and I forgot about it. I'll ban it, I guess

if it comes down to it, "not die". i'd count death's scythe's killing power to be part of his insta-kill, but even taking away that, we'd allow that it's a strong weapon. death could just sit on godzilla's shoulders and hack away at it until it gives up. a beast, powerful as it might be, is not equipped to defeat a force of nature

he gets killed with said scythe, the only thing that could kill him. i don't think the scenario that led to this happening would come up in mercs, but if somebody could convincingly argue that a character could get death's scythe away from him somehow and use it on him, that'd be another avenue of victory. unfortunately, that's something else godzilla can't really do

Death

Even banning instant kills, I think he has enough power to kill Godzilla. Considering that Godzilla is gigantic and hard to miss, while Death appears to be human-sized, Death's likely to get the first strike and likely gets to decide the circumstances of the battle. Just a bad matchup for Godzilla.
