Being rich with a big house sounds like way more trouble than it's worth. Far be it from me to judge someone's living style, but sometimes I believe people like my mother want to die in debit, or something. Isn't peace of mind success enough? I'm not rich or anything, but by keeping a simple budget and commuting to throwing something into savings every pay check I can get any stupid thing i want in life, and never once stressed about paying bills. I don't get why people do that shit to themselves...

Most debt i have to worry about is 3k in student loans after getting a bachelors. I got off so much easy than most just from not failing, and riding most of college at home.

Not gonna lie - I am notoriously cheap too.

Combination of ego and stupidity

I'm only abrasive towards those I see as morons. GFaqs is one big PnP RPG. Sometimes it's fun to be a good guy, sometimes a bad guy, but it's almost always fun.

I've noticed it mostly has to do with peer pressure and social acceptance.

I just moved into an HOA community, first time I've ever done so. The amount of pressure to conform is ridiculous. Every house is the same, with the same setups. One person builds a fence, everyone has to build a fence. Once people started getting that Ring app for their doorbell, everyone got it. So on and so forth with lawn structures, home renovations, and car upgrades.

It's a combination of Fear of Missing Out and discretionary income from being middle class or above. Meanwhile, my neighbors go out to eat every weekend to fancy sit-down restaurants (even during COVID), then complain in our community facebook group of increased water/power rates and that they are struggling to pay them this month.

It seems people don't budget and prefer to live in the moment, putting more attention to their immediate comfort (i.e. eating out, getting a fancy new TV or grill) or showing off to their friends community (new car, new fence, new home addition). That's my observation on it, anyways.

I plan to stay here for about a year or two to finish saving up and then my wife and I are buying a cheap plot of land somewhere rural and just build our own house there and that's that. Plant our own fruit/vegetable garden and live a simple lifestyle.

Not saying you can't have stuff, but live at your own pace, save, and pay for stuff only when you can afford it. The shit isn't going anywhere. It's why i don't buy games full price. Being a pc gamer when shit goes on sale all the damn time it's pointless.

that reminds me...the next time i see my siblings bitching about bills on social media i am trolling my ass off - people need to learn to STFU.

From my observations, it at least seems like younger generations aren't as materialistic as Boomers. Mostly because we can't afford to be, but even then many of us who become successful will shoot for minimalist lives to obtain financial freedom.

But then the older gen get stupid and mis interpret that as a lack of ambition, or something.

On top of that, sometimes I feel people do it to justify the long hours they are putting in for the money they are making.

Like whats the point of having all this money and having no spare time if you have nothing to show for it? The more money you make, the more expensive your tastes become to justify it. And sometimes it gets to the point where it never becomes satiated .

happened to me in the past :)
