If the kid fired first without provocation then the crowd absolutely has the right to try and disarm him. Now, that's pretty stupid trying to disarm a gun wielder who has already fired it. But the kid can't claim self defense if he instigated things. I'm not a lawyer but there has to be some kind of standard for self defense. Let's say he didn't fire his gun and some guy said to him something very threatening. That might be enough to get self defense. But I'm guessing that the prosecution is going to say that the fact that he brought an illegal weapon into a riot zone waives his right to use self defense. Once you establish that he's in the commission of crime self defense goes out the window. A burglar can't claim that he was attacked by the guy whose house he was in. Killed him, then claim self defense.
