While not outwardly malicious (they don't commit violent crimes, for example), they have created a potent doomsday device that, when activated, will completely and without fail kill every single human on and around the planet (out to the Moon's orbit), themselves included.

However, they are extremely motivated by a drive to save the planet and feel that humans have had a detrimental effect on Earth's ecosystems. Thus, they believe that the only way to allow Earth to recover its natural splendor is to completely remove the human influence from it.

I know it's a clich, but still.

It's a bit like claiming that whoever drafted the blueprints for the Nazi gas chambers when the idea of the Final Solution was still crystallizing could not have been evil because in their own view, their design had the best of intentions behind it and the proposed extermination of the Jews was a philanthropic enterprise.
