They didn't want to acknowledge the prequels because their entire business model was OT nostalgia

They had no plan for Rey so she just kind of whatevers, but that wasn't necessary anyway

What

Also it's so much fucking bullshit that Finn was allegedly the first stormtrooper ever to break out of the brainwashing and he became one of the most hated people in the FO and a Resistance hero and then they drop a fuckton of ex stormtroopers on us from who knows where

And then try and set him up with a black chick cause Disney chickened out on implying inter racial relationships

They chickened out of more than that, considering how many people thought it would be awesome if Poe and Finn became a couple.

Episode VIII should have been the two of them having buddy cop adventures and teasing sexual tension in parallel to the Rey/Kylo/Jedi plot. With no Rose, no stupid space casino, and no entirely pointless and unnecessary sideplot that goes nowhere just to fill time.

Rose was fine as a character. It was just that shoehorned 'romance' with Finn that literally came out of nowhere and equally went nowhere.

Rose was fine as a character.

She really wasn't, because so much of her character was tied into all of the other things wrong with the movie.

If you cut out all the bad moments and poor writing, she has almost no personality and no justification to exist.

In theory, she could have been salvaged if they'd actually fleshed out her personality, gave her something useful to do, introduced her in an effective way, and didn't tie her to a terrible and utterly pointless sideplot. But in that scenario she'd also be an almost entirely different character.

If anything, I have a sneaking suspicion the ONLY reason she was introduced into the story at all was solely to HAVE the shoehorned romance with Finn just so they could defuse any assumption that Finn might be gay. Because we certainly can't have that!

Either that or they didn't want to hook him up with Rey. Interracial relationships still don't play very well to a significant portion of the population.

Yeah, but she's Asian, so it's still interracial.

Unless you're suggesting the problem is specifically just a black man with a white woman (which could be the case).

This is almost always the problem

Even white man and black woman (probably the second most stigmatized) doesn't carry nearly the same baggage.

I'm talking specifically mainstream western culture of course, I know other groups have their own least favorite race ships

The Chinese just don't like Finn in general. They're super anti-black there.

I'd hypothesize that Rose was added just so that there'd always be an Asian character in every scene Finn's in to defuse their hate for black people, but if so that was kind of a terrible idea since they hired a Vietnamese actress to play the character, and the Chinese tend to look down on Vietnamese people as well. Though it could be worse, they could have cast a Japanese actress.

I think they wanted someone to bounce off Finn because they wanted Poe to have his own stupid sub plot. I think they wanted to try something different with Rose and it didn't work super well.

I say this as someone who likes TLJ, recently rewatching it I think it's easily the best of the sequels, but flawed in a few key ways.

I actually liked Rose, but their side-plot needed more actual impact on the story as a whole. Literally the only thing that notably affected the story was Finn getting a chance to confront Phasma again (and even that scene was way better in the Deleted Scene)

In the grand scheme of things it didn't matter because you could cut it or replace it with something similar and the film would be mostly the same.

It is a symptom of Disney's general attitude towards lightspeed in the Star Wars universe being a malleable gimmick that the heroes can use as a get out of trouble free card, rather than how previously it was a potentially dangerous and unreliable tool that was necessary at all times. Examples include light speed from inside a ship (TFA), onto a planet (TFA), through a ship (Rebels), and "skipping" (RoS). I suspect it's going to get more ridiculous with time.

Basically it's not a problem TLJ created, but they did put it in the forefront. It annoys me because it's one of the few things in Star Wars that has been relatively consistent before now.

If they were gonna do that they'd probably have done it for the "Bad Batch" cartoon they're making.

Yeah, I remember when Black Panther was released there, and some Chinese people were claiming the story was hard to follow because they couldn't tell the actors apart.

And I'm like, that's one of the stereotypically racist things to say in America (they all look alike, or words to that effect), but I'd never really thought people bought into that. :/

I'm not trying to say you're wrong when I say this, just expressing confusion to be clear.

I thought the prevalent theory was that he was bi and had a thing for both Poe and Rey, not strictly gay tbh.

It's literally just fanfiction and stems from people being unable to conceive of two male friends acting affectionate towards one another

No. The originals never released there originally and so the sequels (which are like 90% OT nostalgia) perform just horrid there. It's part of the reason why Star Wars will probably never become an MCU giant no matter how hard Disney pushed it, it has only half the audience to work with.
