Butter. Margarine is tolerable, but generally a significantly inferior product. Shortening is disgusting.

I think I prefer margarine. I can just pull it out of the fridge and spread it on things. With Butter, either it's in the fridge and turned to stone, or it's on the counter and turned to mush. or when I get it with soup from Tim's, melted all over everything.

Butter!
I think margarine can be useful in baking for its melting properties. At the end of the day, it is a substitute for butter. Bacon grease is one of the few things that surpasses butter for me.
