Get your damn flu shot.

A flu shot requires nearly no effort on your part and reduces likelihood of contracting the flu, reduces the severity of the flu if you do get it, and will reduce the likelihood of spreading it to others.

Flu already results in hospitalizations every fall and winter; let's not overwhelm hospitals with both flu and COVID, ok?

I usually don't. Thus far, I've only had one in my life, when I was working at a nursing home for a short while and it was mandatory. Expecting a delicate and careful procedure, I was completely shocked when they near-literally threw the syringe into my shoulder. *SHUNK!* Though painless and without discomfort, the extreme contrast between expectation and reality immediately put me into a fit of laughter, with relaughs throughout the day. Looking back on it, I'm still tickled by that incident.

With the pandemic going on and my workplace offering free flu shots, I probably will get one this year.

And what if your flu would have been worse if you didn't get the vaccine? You don't know in your case.

At worst, the vaccine had no effect in your case. Not a very good argument to avoid it going forward when it is so easy to get.

My first patient as an intern on a Neurological Disease unit in 1976 had contracted Guillain-Barre syndrome from the flu shot. Since the flu shot continues to be relatively ineffective and carries a risk of serious nerve damage, I've never taken it and never will.

You'd think that you'd know that you're significantly more likely to get GBS from a bout of the flu, compared to from a vaccination.

As a result, depending on the incidence of flu and the effectiveness of the vaccine in a given year, vaccination will tend to significantly reduce your chance of contracting GBS.

No vaccine will ever be 100% effective, let alone against such a highly mutable virus. That seems like a rather unrealistic, arbitrary standard to hold.

That most likely wont happen. The reason we have to get one every year is because of the new strain. And I dont think doctors will listen to fortune tellers when trying to guess the new strain to somehow make a vaccine against...

Yes, billions of dollars are spent and tens of thousands of people work together on research, development, and distribution for a flu vaccine that ultimately causes more people to get sick.

What an absolutely atrocious take.

Thats not how that works. Unless you can produce the studies and paperwork that prove that the flu shot causes sickness, which in all honesty would be a pretty massive game changer.

With that said, with a basic understanding of immunology and vaccinations, we can expect some minor flu-like symptoms, none of which will ever be remotely close to actually having the flu.

It's not a priority for the people in my house that have the resources. Just like a replacement ID and social security card aren't.

I'm disabled, so I end up having to rely on those around me to consider something a priority. This has never been considered one. It actually requires a lot more than effort on my part.
